Consider bird-related golf terminology

We are blessed
Spring in Charbonneau offers quite a variation of weather patterns and limitless opportunities to test our skills in less
BONINO than ideal conditions . Charbonneau is ablaze in color and every turn provides stunning beauty . As of April 1 , we ’ ve had wind , rain , more rain and wind , some mid 70s and sun , more rain and cooler weather , and soggy conditions . Things are looking up however , with warmer temperatures , snowbirds returning to roost and full rosters for golf . Regardless , it ’ s been fun to play and it ’ s always good to be out on the course .
A few golf terms to ponder
The word bunker did not appear or associate with the game of golf until the early 1800s in the royal and ancient rules of golf . Since then , it seems to appear quite regularly in my game , and several of yours as well from what I observe . It is derived from the old Scottish word “ bonkor ”, meaning a chest . Hazard , on the other hand , is a French word that the Scots let creep into the lingo . I think we all preferred the French just sticking to wine .
Bird watching and golf
Did you know there are six birds associated with scoring in golf ? There may be a seventh , but we can ’ t publish that one . Of course , we all know birdie and eagle . Then there is the albatross , which is quite rare . One of the most elusive of all , however , is the condor . Yes , that ’ s really a thing . The bird theme actually came into being in the United States , with birdie being born around 1903 . By 1919 the term eagle was being utilized on both sides of the Atlantic . Not to be outdone , our red-coat friends in Britain began using the term Albatross in
1929 . Perhaps they were better golfers than we were here in the U . S .
A bigger , better , more magnificent bird , the condor fits perfectly into the theme of scoring in golf as well . With the advent of par 5s , and par 6s ( rare and daunting ), a condor is a score of 4 under on a par 5 ( or a hole in one ), and a score of 2 , four under on a par 6 . Yet , if you have a par 6 , you have a potential 5 under par score . If you were to achieve that , you would have scored an ostrich . If you ’ re game to try , the two closest par 6 holes to Charbonneau are The Links Golf Course in Post Falls , Idaho and the Reserve at Moonlight View in Big Sky , Montana . Both courses boast a 777-yard par six hole .
There is yet , one more bird to discuss and sadly this one resides on the other side of par and is the oft-maligned buzzard . Appropriately , a double bogey has the distinction of being dubbed a buzzard . You will often see them circling overhead when I ’ m on the course . With all these birds it ’ s no wonder the first golf balls were stuffed with feathers .
What never caught on were terms of endearment for a hole-in-one . It was initially dubbed Curlew in the U . K . and “ Whaup ” if you were Scottish . I for one , am thankful neither of these caught on . I think we all prefer ace .
