How One Person Fed
200 Homeless People Without
Spending a Dime
It all started with Tiffany Durgin,
the Office Manager at VOL Parish. Tiffany
is not a VOL Parishioner; in fact, she isn’t
Catholic. But she is part of the VOL
family.
Tiffany felt that God put it in her
heart to feed a few homeless people in our
community, but she didn’t know how she
would do the legwork or pay for the food.
After asking 4 other people to help
her buy, cook, and deliver some food to the
homeless, Tiffany’s group grew to 5

make a difference.
Then Tiffany mentioned her idea to
Fr. Daniel Green, VOL’s Parochial Vicar.
Fr. Daniel was very interested in the
project, and thought it would be a great
experience for the members of our CYO.
Danny Laurent, our CYO Director, went to
work on the project, and with the help of
social media, signed up dozens of
volunteers and received donations for ALL
the food and paper goods within 24 hours!
Even after all the food ‘wish list’
had been filled, the donations kept coming! All food needed for this project was donated
within 24 hours after a request was sent over
Parishioner Wanda Laborie of Laborie’s
social media.
Budget Saver generously donated 70
pounds of ground beef, bottled water,
green beans, cookies, and bread!
The morning of the event, over
60 people showed up to help. Tiffany was
amazed. What started as one idea from
one woman bloomed into a multitude of
people volunteering to cook, serve, and
deliver 200 lunches.
Tiffany couldn’t imagine how
she would pull this off, but God provided
everything she needed to do His work - a
wonderful reminder for all of us that God
is in charge!
There will be more VOL service
projects planned for the future that will
require lots of helping hands. We’ll
advertise the opportunities to serve as
soon as they are planned.
In the meantime, let’s take a
second to reflect on how one woman fed
two hundred homeless people without
spending a dime. One person really can
make a difference in the world!
Over 60 CYO members, parents, and parishioners came to help feed
the homeless for a project that began with 5 people.
CYO students formed an assembly line to fill 200 lunches for
the homeless.
