Sacrificial Love is the Key That
Opens the Pearly Gates
We Americans are the freest people who ever lived; and, in large
part, we owe our freedom to the fifty-six men who signed the
Declaration of Independence. Their conviction gives us freedom. Their
conviction gave themselves untold suffering.
Of the 56 men who courageously signed the Declaration of
Independence, five were captured by the British and tortured to death.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in
the Revolutionary War. Nine others lost their own lives either during the
war or, after the war, from wounds suffered during
the war.
Carter Braxton was a wealthy Virginia planter
and trader. After signing the Declaration, he saw the
ships he owned sunk by the British navy. He sold his
home and everything else he owned to pay his debts.
He died in poverty. The British commandeered the
home of another signer, Thomas Nelson. Nelson
asked General George Washington to open fire on his
home. It was destroyed and, like Braxton, Nelson
