Monitoring your caloric intake,
alone, is not a precursor to
eating disorders for the vast
majority of people. Serious
eating disorders are real mental
illnesses that are much more
complex than calorie counting.
Simply because some people
with eating disorders count
calories doesn’t mean that
calories counting causes eating
disorders, disordered eating or
makes them more likely.
If you have a history of
diagnosis or treatment for an
eating disorder, you should work
cooperatively with your medical
professional team to create a
plan to safely move you into a
healthy weight range (yes, it’s
still important and yes, it’s
possible). But for the rest of us,
we can learn to make monitoring
and management of our caloric
intake easy and effective.
