The Selfish Act By Alisha Gaitan
The assassination of Julius Caesar had its reasons for being done, but overall the whole thing was an obnoxious termination that could have been taken care of in other ways but one. The foretold Cassius was the
ringleader of this horrific sight. Cassius was a jealous scum and thought if anyone should have power of
Rome, it should be him. His theory comes from a story that once Cassius long ago saw helpless Caesar
drowning in deep water and bravely went to rescue him. Is this story true? Or is Cassius making up sick lies
to create a better alibi for passing a sword through Caesar? And for thinking he was better than him because
he saved him? Many questions behind this murder and the careless Cassius. It is said that Cassius purposely tried to manipulate Brutus into joining the assassination party to gain more of Caesar’s trust and worked “I
have heard where many of the best respect in Rome (except immortal Caesar), speaking of Brutus, and
groaning underneath this age’s yoke, Have wished that noble Brutus had his eye.” ( Line 58-62) Brutus
thought he was noble enough to do anything. The vulnerable Brutus was convinced that the idea was good
and would benefit him so much more to save Rome from a leader who wouldn’t benefit them. Brutus goes
through with the plan, it’s amazing how Brutus can bare to watch his beloved friend, lie there, surrounded by
the blood he shed with his own hand, no words, just a soul lost and never to breath again. This is all so sick
and twisted. Why would Brutus go against his very best friend all for Caesar not becoming king of Rome?
Was Brutus jealous also? This murder could have had many strings attached and no one would know except
for the people who did it. At Caesar’s funeral, Brutus spoke before Antony and gave good words about Caesar and admitted he well murdered his friend. He gave almost valid reasons for doing it and one of them was
to protect Rome. The people felt a sort of comfort towards Brutus and looked at him with Honor and cheered
at his presence. A man that just killed the practical king of Rome is now being Honored? That is a revolting
turn of events. He then proceeded to talking about all the good qualities of Caesar, he called him ambitious.
Ambitious is a strong word that doesn’t really fit Caesar as a man. Brutus is a trader, he is not a man of loyalty and he definitely wasn’t Caesar’s friend if he killed him The whole assassination was foolish and had too
many reasons that were ignorant with no type of facts to back it up. What if Cassius’s story is a lie? What if
Rome would have been fine under Caesar’s power? Overall this wasn’t right. Cassius could have done it solo to not give Caesar such a vicious and ruthless death. This could have been solved between men without a
murder.
