Whose Lives Matter?! Carly Hoss and Eric Maurer JTCentral # BlackLivesMatter. # BlueLivesMatter. # AllLivesMatter. Whose lives really matter?! This class will push us to engage with the current events surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. We will be challenged to understand racial justice and diversity through a Jewish lens.
Does God Play Dice? Jason Kay JTCentral Science and religion, two of the most widespread ideas in the world, sometimes seem to be at odds. Einstein himself didn’ t accept the field of quantum physics because he said“ God does not play dice” with the universe. Let’ s explore ways in which Judaism and science seem to contradict each other as well as ways in which science itself is at the heart of so much of religion.
Medical Ethics Jason Kay JTCentral Ethical issues in modern medicine are of concern and interest to everyone. Jewish ethics, with regard to medicine and individual situations, has been discussed extensively for several millennia. Every topic in modern life has been dealt with in the Jewish sources. Come dig into this complex topic including stem cell research, physicians­assisted suicide, issues regarding terminally ill patients and more.
Cookin ' Through the Torah Jason Oruch JTCentral, JTAwakening Food is used to nourish the body & soul. Our culture revolves around food; almost every Jewish holiday & most Jewish rituals have a variety of culinary traditions. Each week teens will create food that has a basis in the weekly Torah portion. Learn how to prepare traditional(& some nontraditional) foods as you explore the wide array of ingredients.
Up, Up and Oy Vey! Rabbi Chagie Rubin JTAwakenings In addition to saving the day from the forces of evil, superheroes can also teach us a lot about Jewish values. In Batman, we learn about vigilantism, revenge vs. justice and risking you life to save others. We learn from Spiderman,“ that with great powers comes great responsibilities.” And with X­Men, that violence is not the solution to bigotry and hate. Students will choose the films, watch, analyze, question and debate issues relating to it.
Israel Inside Out Rabbi David Small JTAwakenings Teens need to have a broader exposure to Israel today including culture, contemporary issues in society, conflicts and controversy and challenges. This course is a mix of exposure to culture, food, music and media, religion, politics, security, technology, environment and other aspects of Israeli life. When confronted by hostile critics of Israel, students will be aware of the issues and have already begun to develop their own ideas and opinions.( Required for Emanuel 10th Graders)
