SJI sailors were focused on the goal to be fully committed to training whilst placing an equal emphasis on schoolwork . United by the mantra to “ Raise above the challenge ”, the team worked with teachers and coaches to maximise each training session . Each session aimed to improve physical fitness and racing skills , readying the sailors for outstanding performances in the various regattas .
The rigorous training paid dividends with the impressive haul of silverware from the various competitions . The fleet participated in the National Schools Games , the Students Challenge Trophy and the Singapore Youth Championships . Unfortunately , several competitions were cancelled or postponed because of the closure of most Sailing venues island wide due to the oil spill in June .
However , off the waters , the SJI sailors continued to lend support for Singapore Sailing ’ s effort to promote sailing for all by participating in the ‘ Get Kids Afloat ’ programme during the school holidays . This student-initiated activity required the sailors to devote a week of their time to teach underprivileged children the fundamentals of sailing under the guidance of volunteer club coaches .

Boat rigging and handling , knot tying , points of sail , launching and recovery were some of the elements that were taught . Each sailor was paired with a young learner as they sailed in the calm waters at Sembawang . Our sailors continue to find this combined effort impactful , as they make their contribution to foster care and goodwill to others in the sailing community in Singapore . |
