Beacon
Beacon is a service-driven CAS which offers various opportunities for its members to engage in community service , contributing their skills and creativity to the service of the larger community . It works closely with established organisations such as Love Kuching and St Luke ’ s Eldercare and collaborates with new partners like the Migrant Workers ’ Centre ( MWC ) and ItsRainingRaincoats ( IRR ), among others , to provide long and short-term initiatives for volunteering .
Earlier this year , Beacon launched its first Picnic Under the Stars ( PUTS ) in collaboration with Astronomy CAS , with the aim of strengthening the community spirit among new Year 5 Josephians while celebrating the achievements of Year 6 students . Another of Beacon ’ s notable successes was its annual Bake Sale , which drew a large crowd at the school foyer , where members sold their home-baked goods to the school population . The funds were raised for IRR , an organisation which works to improve the welfare of migrant brothers , empowering students to contribute their skills to enrich the lives of others . In yet another fund-raising project , Beacon made a huge splash at its second `Splash for Impact ’ carwash fundraiser for MWC , surpassing the set goal of $ 600 five-fold . Over 20 teachers and parents had their cars washed and members honed their collaboration skills to expedite the smooth flow of the event while raising funds .
Beacon ’ s long-standing partnership with St Luke ’ s Eldercare promotes members ’ effective communication with and compassion for the elderly through arts
and crafts and karaoke sessions . Through hands-on interactions , the students developed deeper connections with and empathy for the elderly population , bridging the gap between the two generations .
Year after year , Beacon members also volunteer at the Love Kuching cattery to maintain the cleanliness of the shelter , as well as to rehabilitate injured cats through play and interaction .
Finally , Beacon ’ s most highly anticipated event , Concert Agape , featured performers from various schools , such as Raffles Institution , Eunoia Junior College , Catholic Junior College and more . A large team of members planned and facilitated the smooth flow of the concert to celebrate the spirit of ‘ Agape ’ – love and charity – through music , embodying the values of Service and Community .
