Debate Society
Every Tuesday , SJI ’ s Debate Society engages in critical discussion and discourse about important and contemporary global issues , debating the best governmental systems , the efficacy of political correctness , and gender inequality . Debate CAS provides an environment of trust and mutual respect where students can enhance their communication skills and critical thinking in a safe and fun manner .
Led by our coach , SJI debaters are individuals sharing a common interest in the art of persuasion and the structured science of logic . Students can improve their skills in discourse , concise communication , public speaking , and time management , as well as providing them with knowledge about various sociological , political , economic , and philosophical issues .
This year , the Debate Society participated in several competitions , including NUSPA , DEDO , and the yearly intervarsity competition organised by University Technology Malaysia , where Josephians were able to debate against university teams from around the world .
A notable achievement this year was when our contingent from SJI broke into the quarterfinals at the 2024 MOE ACJC intercollegiate debating championships . Aarush Nair ( LE607 ), Gabrielle Janine Dairianathan ( MN618 ), Fan En Rui ( LE610 ) and Rajavel Rahul ( LE510 ) worked together and put up a valiant effort . SJI was also proudly represented by Rahul , who was awarded third-best speaker .
Ultimately , debaters acquire skills that stay useful even after their competitive debating days are finished . People who participate in debate club activities can articulate their thoughts during interviews , showcase a professional demeanour , and effectively communicate their ideas and skills .
The Debate Society continues to strive for excellence , engaging their debaters in inter-school spars with schools such as NUS High School . With “ Illuminate 2024 ” in the works , we look forward to more opportunities to spar and compete with other schools .
