Education & Career Guidance ( ECG )
Education Landscape by ECG Counsellor , Ms Tiang Ginn Wah
The SJI ECG team aims to raise students ’ self-awareness of how their interests , values and skills can be matched to a career and the education pathway and training required to assume that career . In addition , the ECG programme hopes to instil in students the skills and competencies necessary to succeed in the workplace . In order to encourage greater self-awareness , improved skills and competencies , these are some of the ECG programmes that were rolled out in 2019 .
1 . Education and Career Guidance ( ECG ) Advising
– Year 5 ( Term 2 -3 ) Students in Year 5 are identified and divided into groups of 7-10 students . They are then profiled based on their interests , where they will be shown how their interest profile matches a career and the possible educational paths they need to take . Students are then guided to develop an individual Education and Career plan for themselves .
4 . Singapore Convention on Mediation ( SCM ) internship
– Year 6 ( Term 2-3 ) The SCM provides for the cross-border enforcement of mediated settlement agreements , which will facilitate international trade and commerce . The SCM Internship provides students who may be keen on exploring a career in the Public Service an opportunity to interact with civil servants and be exposed to the organization of a large-scale , highlevel international event . Four students were selected for this internship . They worked alongside Ministry of Law officers in planning , preparing for , and running the various events .
2 . Medical Internship – Year 5 ( Aug – Dec 2019 ) 38 students were involved in the medical internship programme where they were attached to two clinics - Mediline Wei Min Clinic and Lee Clinic . Under the guidance of the medical doctors , students had a glimpse into the life of a medical doctor . The internship serves as the first stage of preparing students for the medical profession . They will be guided in Year 6 on handling the medical entrance examinations as well as the interview .
3 . Singapore Academy of Law Programme
– Year 5 ( Dec 2019 ) This is a 2-week programme that introduces students to the law profession , which includes an attachment at various law firms . For the one-week attachment , students will be assigned to a legal practitioner who will walk them through the daily aspects of the job . Five students signed up for this programme in 2019 .
