LEARNING JOURNEYS
Ho Chi Minh , Vietnam Shortly after landing in Ho Chi Minh ’ s Tan Son Ngat airport , our 40 strong Josephian group was warmly welcomed by the members of the Frogsleap Foundation , who amiably referred to themselves by the nickname “ Froggies ”. Together with our newfound friends , our group took a twohour bus ride to the Ma Da commune , where we would stay for the duration of our service work . Under close and caring supervision of the Froggies , we not only gained an intimate knowledge on solar panel and electrical appliance installation but also learned the value of communication and teamwork in a real-world context .
As soon as the last solar panels were installed , we continued to our next task of organising fun activities for the local Ma Da schoolchildren . The Josephians , Froggies , and schoolchildren alike came together to foster an unforgettably animated and lively atmosphere . The happiness and energy from the event transcended even what at first seemed like an impermeable language barrier , and smiles and laughter filled the school . It was these children we continued to think of even as we made our way to the school for a second time the next day to paint intricate murals around their school grounds . This was our parting gift to the children .
We also took the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Vietnam ’ s rich culture , trying our hands at Vietnamese folk games like bamboo dancing , and putting our cooking skills to the test during the Vietnamese food challenge . After completing our service work , our group visited the Cu Chi tunnels the next day and learned of its significance during the Vietnam War . The Josephians were greatly touched by the sincerity and generosity from the Froggies and left Vietnam with new friendships forged .
