PRISM is a student-led initiative that was officially formed in February 2015 . The club is a platform that promotes social entrepreneurship among the students at SJI ( Senior section ). The name ‘’ PRISM ’’ was chosen for the Social Entrepreneurship Club because the humble crystal has the power to transform a single ray of white light into a spectrum of brilliant and beautiful colours . In the same light , the committee envisions the Club to ignite and transform ordinary but willing young men and women into a force of good in our community .
PRISM ’ s strategy is to empower its members to harness their talents so that they can make the world a better place . This will be developed through competitions , school events , partnerships , talks and sharing – all carried out in a sustainable and systematic manner so that the benefits to the needy can be measurable , lasting and followed through over many years .
In 2016 , PRISM participated in several high-impact social entrepreneurship competitions and collaborated with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme ( BMDP ) to put up a balloon light-up performance at the 11th International Donor Registry Conference . Under the guidance of the teacher-mentors and student leaders , PRISM members maintained the high standards set by their seniors and continued to make a significant difference in society .
Our Key Events in 2016
Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes 2016 Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes ( YFC ) is a programme funded by the Citi Foundation and organized by YMCA Singapore , with the aim to promote social entrepreneurship among the youths in Singapore . Nine teams from PRISM participated in the programme over a six-month period from April to September and raised $ 47,722 for their chosen Voluntary Welfare Organizations ( VWOs ).
Each team was granted a $ 1,600 seed funding . With guidance from their VWOs , teachers , seniors and mentors , each team had to develop a viable and creative business strategy to raise social awareness and to maximise returns from their seed money to benefit their VWO . Accordingly , the teams implemented their plans , which ranged from street sales along Orchard Road , charity
runs at East Coast Park , photo booths with guide dogs to organizing a concert under the stars , selling drinks at various events , holding funfair events and selling customised merchandise such as tote bags and artworks etc .
The top team , in terms of the amount generated , was Team IGNITE , consisting of Li Zijian ( JC102 ), Mark Wee Yi Ren ( JC103 ), Peng Lihong ( JC103 ) and Joelle Tan Hwee Inn ( JC110 ), who generated over $ 12,000 for the Riding For Disabled Association ( RDA ) Singapore . The team also achieved a remarkable public outreach of 22,300 people . They organized seven street sales , ran a booth at the RDA carnival and actively sought donations from local firms . As a result , Team Ignite is able to sponsor a therapy horse for an entire year , potentially benefitting many disabled people receiving hippotherapy .
The other team , Team Agape comprising Jared Sim Yu Hern ( JC106 ), Ku Chern Ying Vanessa ( JC103 ), Jessilyn Liew Ying Yee ( JC103 ) and Cai Lize ( JC103 ) received the YFC 2016 Merit Award for displaying commendable effort in executing their plans throughout the course . Oo Guo Xuan ( JC103 ) and Thomas Kent Bean ( JC103 ), the two unofficial members who volunteered and supported the team throughout the whole competition also had a very important part to play .
Through YFC , our students evolved into a group of passionate , innovative and responsible young entrepreneurs who are better prepared to contribute to society and take on new challenges . They developed concepts into sound plans and organized largescale events and are better equipped with essential skills to support the less fortunate in society .
Raffles Business Symposium 2016 Another three teams from PRISM joined Raffles Business Symposium 2016 , an inter-school competition hosted by Raffles Institution to promote entrepreneurship in Singapore ’ s future generation . Each team had to pitch a comprehensive business strategy that would enable their business to succeed in a world of conglomerates . Two teams cleared the Preliminary Round on 27 July and progressed to the final stage on 12 August . Eventually , Team Metamorphus emerged third while Team Velo-city retained
