Design Thinking @ SJI

The Design Thinking Programme @ SJI is based on the Business Design Thinking model of the University of Toronto ’ s Rotman School of Management . This design thinking model envisions empathy through deep understanding to ideation and co-creation and involves understanding the real needs of the users so to come up with practical solutions to address their concerns . Through this programme , we hope to inculcate an innovative mindset in our students so that they may come up with solutions to real problems .

With these goals in mind , the students took on real issues in SJI such as improving school cleanliness and promoting a stronger recycling culture . Some students also collaborated with external communities such as Tiong Bahru Market and Touch Community by working collectively on real challenges faced by them . In our bid to raise empathy for the visually impaired , the students also visited ‘ Dialogue in the Dark ’
organised by Singapore Polytechnic . The visit gave them a chance to walk in the shoes of the visually impaired as they learn more about the world they live it . The students and staff were further enlightened by talks delivered by distinguished speakers such as Mr John Ang , Chief Executive Director of VRM Biologik to share his company ' s innovative ways in food recycling . We were also privileged to have Dr Mohan Rajesh Elara from SUTD ’ s Engineering Product Development to explain how Design Thinking processes help build better machineries of the future .
SJI ’ s Design Thinking Programme Team was honoured to be invited by MOE to share our work at the National Project Work Seminar ( Oct 2015 ) and by Coral Secondary School ( July 2016 ). These events gave us opportunities to learn from like-minded educators on the importance of experiential learning . It has been a fruitful 2016 and we look forward to more exciting learning experiences in 2017 .
