ArtScience IDEA 2016

On 27 May , about 120 Secondary 3 students from SJI and a few participating schools gathered in the Auditorium for IDEA 2016 . It was the culmination of months of hard work spent on their respective project ideas . The 2015-16 ArtScience Prize theme , Machine Life , was designed to challenge students to envision and define an ideal future and find solutions to make that future as bright as possible .

Over the course of five months , students worked in groups to think of solutions to current problems faced by different communities through “ blue-sky ideation ” and then refining those ideas through the disciplines of Art and Science . The final ideas were presented at the preliminary rounds of the competition in the morning . Many creative ideas were presented but only the top 10 groups were selected to present their projects at the Finals held in the afternoon .
The celebration of their ideas started with a short speech by the Guest of Honour , Dr Pablo Valdivia y Alvarado , Assistant Professor from the Faculty of Engineering Product Development at SUTD . After his speech , the judges assessed the ideas presented by the eight finalists . Eventually , two winners were selected . The group , Zhuper Slim from SJI won with their innovative idea of a product which converts static energy in our environment from the collision of dust , into usable electricity to charge our smartphones . Fab-briekers , from CHIJ St Nicholas Girls ' School , won with their innovative idea of a multi-purpose carpet that aims to cushion falls as well as be an interactive platform for children to have fun while interacting with nature .
These two groups were given the opportunity to visit Cambridge ArtScience Labs in July to interact with winners from other ArtScience teams as well as work with experts to further develop their project .
The ArtScience programme was indeed an enriching and challenging experience for all the students who participated in the journey . Congratulations to all the teams who participated in this unique programme !

The 2016 ArtScience theme on Machine Life invited many students to explore new ideas that enhanced our quality of life which would not have been imagined 15 years ago . Team Zhuper Slim won the 2016 ArtScience Prize with our idea of using static electricity to charge phones .
After winning the ArtScience Prize in Singapore , we travelled to Cambridge , Massachusetts , USA in July where we stayed at Le Laboratoire Cambridge to further work on our idea . Our interaction and encounter with the experts such as engineers , product designers , artists and Professor David Edwards , the founder of the ArtScience Prize was very enlightening and made us think hard about our original idea . Throughout the week , we were involved in workshops , lectures and presentations . With inputs from our expert mentors , we brainstormed further and made changes to our original idea , coming home with a modified idea : designing a windbreaker that produces light from kinetic energy .
Team Zhuper Slim comprised Jonathan Su , David Zhu , Elton Lim and Nicholas Sim . Besides the precious learning experience at Le Laboratoire Cambridge that we will remember forever , we treasure the new friendships forged and an understanding of the importance of developing our passion . The journey started with a seed idea in January and grew into a big idea today . Who knows what the future holds for our idea ?
