This year , the SJI judo team has done the school proud in clinching several individual and team medals . Training thrice a week at Catholic Junior College , the team reaped the fruits of their labour and brought home the team bronze medals for both ‘ B ’ and ‘ C ’ Division , in addition to individual medals .
The ‘ B ’ Division team championships is the most competitive as nearly all competing judokas are in Secondary 4 or 5 , and at their peak of skill and strength . Everyone wants to end their judo CCA career with a medal win and hence we see more blood and sweat spilled at ‘ B ’ Division in this high-risk contact sport . The odds were stacked against us from the start with an unfavorable bout draw where we had to beat strong rivals at more bouts than usual . But , together with our alumnus judokas who returned to give encouragement , the ‘ B ’ Division team weathered against the odds as a family and found faith to believe in what seemed like the insurmountable . After a very exhausting day ( we were in the 2nd set and played nearly non-stop through to the day ’ s final bout ), we had given each of our opponents a good fight and were very happy to bring home the team bronze for SJI ! Most of the ‘ C ’ Division team have only a little over one year of experience in Judo and were a bundle of nerves as they stepped onto the mats for their first bout of the competition . Putting their trust in God to keep them safe and determined to fight well and honorably , our coach was proud of how the ‘ C ’ Division judokas played and we could see their efforts in coming regularly for training pay off in clinching a well-deserved bronze medal for the team category .
In the individual categories , we are pleased that the following judokas managed to achieve a medal in their respective weight categories :
‘ B ’ Division ( individual ) - - Thant Zin Tun ( bronze ) - Eu Chun Kang ( silver ) ‘ C ’ Division ( individual ): - Anand Chanan ( bronze ) - Arjuna Tan ( bronze ) - Callum Natarajan ( silver )
The SJI Judo team would like to thank their coaches , Mr Rocky Koh and Ms Ngo Yeeling , for their patience and time in preparing the team well ; and also the teachers ( Mrs Michelle Toh , Ms Nevina Ho , Ms Therese Tan and Mr Anthony Khoo ) for their care and support . Above all , the team is grateful to God for His protection during the training sessions and also all through the many bouts at the National Competition .
