It was a rewarding experience for the Josephian community because we all , in one way or another , learnt the significance of ethnicity and the rituals performed in various religions . The SJI community also managed to learn much from the CCS performance about Chinese culture , of which many traditions and customs are slowly and undeniably lost in Singapore today . This was the experience that opened our eyes for us to see and wonder at the spread of various cultures in our own home , SJI .
SJI ArtsFest On the last week of Term 3 , the Chinese Cultural Society participated in the Artsfest . Our programme “ Sticks and Scripts ” targeted to enrich audience ’ s knowledge about Chinese drama and Chinese percussion .
The Chinese drama group performed a short play about a fire during an examination and invited some of the audience to try acting out their own version , which they played out with much hilarity . The Chinese percussion group members played “ Rolling Walnuts ” before letting the audience have a go on the drums . We ended off with our SYF piece “ Lion ”. The audience was very enthusiastic throughout . Both the performers and audience had fun during the interactive section . By the end of the day , the percussionists also held another performance in the amphitheatre , which had received a round of applause from the impressed audience .
Chinese Tea Appreciation cum Farewell Ceremony at Tea Chapter On the 16th of September , the Chinese Cultural Society went to the “ Tea Chapter ”, which is a tea house at Chinatown , to attend a Tea Art and Craft appreciation workshop . Besides learning basic tea appreciation and the intricate rituals of Chinese tea drinking such as the different varieties of tea and tea drinking etiquette , we also learned about the history and customs of the Mid-autumn Festival through a short video , followed by a hands-on experience of making mooncakes .
We also held our Secondary Four Farewell Ceremony there , a heartwarming gathering with our Secondary Four seniors with sentimental speeches , a recap of memorable photos and gift exchanges .
It was truly an unforgettable trip , during which the boys not only got to learn more about Chinese culture , but also could bid farewell to the Secondary 4s in style .
