Chinese Cultural Society
Chinese Cultural Society ( CCS ) is an aesthetics group which works together hand in hand with the Mother Tongue Languages Department to promote Chinese culture in the school . CCS provides a platform to expose our students to activities like theatre exposures , cultural visits and community involvement programme as well as to provide trainings in stage performance , script writings , musical score reading , percussion instruments playing and others . Qualified instructors from the respective fields are engaged to provide trainings to the drama group and Chinese drums group . All Secondary One students who are taking Higher Chinese as their Mother Tongue are encouraged to join CCS for a period of at least six months for the exposure to the Chinese culture .
Chinese New Year Performance We ushered in the year of the dragon with a group of members performing the lion dance during the Chinese New Year concert . It was a great challenge for them as the lion heads
were relatively heavy for lower secondary members and the percussion was very different from what they were used to . None of them possessed martial arts or lion dance background . They had to go through a series of intensive trainings after the end of year examinations last year under the guidance of the instructor . They put up a great show despite the challenge they faced .
Performance @ St Theresa ’ s Home This Easter was slightly different as we joined in the Easter celebrations with the old folks at St Theresa ’ s Home . We brought along a drum piece “ Rolling Walnuts ” ( 滚核桃 ) and a skit written and performed by the Secondary Ones “ Pocket Money Not Enough , How ?” ( 零用钱不 够 , 怎么办 ).
Hosting of Visitors from Catholic High Malaysia , Petaling A group of students and teachers from Catholic High Malaysia , Petaling visited SJI on 29 March and Chinese Cultural Society had
the honour of hosting our guests . Our guests performed for us the Lion dance , Chinese dance and martial arts performance which were really an eye-opener for our members . In return , we performed “ Rolling Walnuts ” ( 滚核 桃 ) and a skit “ King of Train Derailment ” ( 列车 出轨王 ).
Theatre Experience @ Drama Centre Theatre Our members attended the local musical “ Lao Jiu ” ( 老九 ) during the Kuo Pao Kun Festival 2012 . “ Lao Jiu ” is one of Kuo Pao Kun ’ s most popular and accessible works . In 2005 , “ Lao Jiu ” was adapted into a dazzling musical for the first time , and this year it was restaged as an entirely new creative production featuring an exciting new lineup of performers and creative collaborators . We also had the privilege of having an interactive session with the director and actors prior to the performance .
