RobCooper.UK 2017 Maintain good Eye Contact Maintaining good eye contact with your interview panel demonstrates that you are alert and interested. When you are asked a question, look at the person who has asked you the question, but also include the rest of the panel by talking to them too. If you can’t look someone in the eye, you may be perceived as shy or even ignorant and disinterested. Never stare at the interview panel as this is considered rude. Looking blankly at them could be interpreted as being badly prepared for the interview as you are unable to answer the questions. Mirror your interviewer Mirroring involves matching your own body language to that of the interviewer’s body language. Without being obvious, you can discreetly adapt your posture, tone of voice and facial expressions to match the interviewer’s. This helps build rapport by making the other person feel more comfortable around you. Your aim is to establish common ground and foster mutual respect. Good Communication Talk confidently and clearly. The panel want to hear and understand what you are saying to them. When giving your evidence, include them all by talking to them. www.robcooper.uk 5
