The Tucson J TIKKUN Social OLAM Action Update The mission of the Tucson J is to cultivate and enrich Jewish identity, ensure Jewish continuity, foster wellness, and broaden communal harmony. Part of our vision is a commitment to share the richness and tradition of Jewish culture with members of the general Community. As the Tucson J continues to find ways to fulfill the important mitzvah (commandment) of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), we are proud to announce our next project to help Youth On Their Own (YOTO.) YOTO is a dropout prevention program that supports high school graduation and continued success of homeless, unaccompanied youth in Pima County. One of their biggest needs right now are school supplies. The Tucson J is going to be collecting school supplies through the end of July and we need your help. Below is a list of their biggest needs. All school supplies will be gratefully accepted and appreciated, but the items listed are the supplies they are most in need of. Highlighters Markers Index cards Flash drives Folders Colored pencils Scientific and graphing calculators Mechanical pencils Composition notebooks Donations can be dropped off near the front entrance in the marked container. The organization was founded in 1986 when Ann Young, a guidance counselor at Amphitheater High School, became concerned about the increasing number of homeless students, so she took it upon herself to do something about it. Young’s compassion and initiative evolved into the agency that exists today. It took a lot of hard work and support from volunteers over the last 31 years to get the organization on its feet. Visit the YOTO website to learn more about this important organization, www.yoto.org. Feel free to contact our Tikkun Olam and Social Action Coordinator Ori Parnaby at 299-3000 x241 or concierge@ jewishtucson.org.
