2023 Charbonneau Scholarship winners

Every year the three Charbonneau Golf groups provide annual scholarships to qualified employees of the Charbonneau Golf Club . Applications are received in September , reviewed by a special committee made up of

Niners and the Charbonneau Women ’ s Golf Association and the winners are announced in late November .

Recipients for the 2023 Scholarships are Sabinne Garcia , a business major at Clackamas Community College ; McKenna Rump , enrolled at the University of Oregon in education ; and Cole Daly , majoring in advertising at the University of Oregon .

The committee evaluates applicants and considers financial need , the applicant ’ s goals , outside interests and activities , grades , recommendations and more .

This program is funded by donations from the membership of each of the three golfing groups , club budgeted donations and anonymous donations from the local golf community . The scholarship committee is very grateful for the support and anticipates the program will continue indefinitely .

Thank you for a job well done

Last month we announced a change of leadership for the Charbonneau Men ’ s Club 2024 year . Chairing his last meeting as president in November was Don Mason . We would like to extend our thanks to Don for staying on an extra year and guiding the club through the COVID-19 pandemic years and for his dedication to Charbonneau , our greens and maintenance staff and the head pro and his staff during this difficult time . is one of the toughest volunteer roles of all and you performed with dedication and tenacity . Assuming a leadership role takes a special person . Thank you Don for all that you have done .

sponsoring a Chili and Chowder dinner on Jan . 17 in the dining room of the old Activity Center . All residents of Charbonneau , guests and friends are welcome . The cost of the dinner will be $ 20 per person . Checks can be dropped off or mailed to the Charbonneau Golf Course Pro Shop . Please make checks payable to The Charbonneau Men ’ s Club Scholarship Fund . Dinner will be held from 5:30-7 p . m .

The dreaded E Score in GHIN .

Lately we ’ ve been razzing a couple of golfers who have had an exceptional outing and posted an E-score , according to GHIN . Just what is this and how does it affect a handicap ?

An Exceptional Score is a score differential that is at least seven strokes better than the player ’ s Handicap Index at the time the round was played . Your Handicap Index is a measure of your playing ability . It is based on scores relative to the course and tees played during those rounds . The expectation of playing to your handicap will occur once in every fourto-five rounds . In other words , you actually will play two-to-five strokes higher most of the time . This makes a score seven strokes less than a Handicap Index truly exceptional .

Just what does an E mean for my Handicap Index . You ’ re going down like a sinking ship . Well , maybe not quite so graphically , but your Handicap Index will get an automatic adjustment of -1.0 or -2.0 . Research has shown that if you get one E , you are more likely to get another in the future . Score differentials between 7.0 and 9.9 will get a -1 adjustment applied to each of the most recent 20 Score Differentials in your scoring record , thus reducing your Handicap Index by 1 stroke . Now you can wear your new scarlet letter with pride . But wait , it gets better . If your E score was 10 strokes better than your Handicap Index at the time your round was played , you earn a -2 adjustment . Brace yourself , as your score differentials for the most recent 20 rounds earn you a Handicap Index reduction of -2 strokes for those 20 rounds .

A blessing and a curse

Golf is full of such examples , as making a hole-in-one will earn you the obligation to buy drinks for your golfing pals . Do well and get slapped . Turn that other cheek , my friend . At least for 20 rounds , and hope you don ’ t “ E ” again during that time . Es can be cumulative and acquire additional rewards ! There are no limits . Well , actually there are , but I ’ ve never met anyone who has been that fortunate .
