6 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER January 2023

MEET THE SPORTS CENTER LEADERSHIP TEAM

BY JOHN MCLAIN
Sports Center News :

Gary Newbore , CCC President , is leading a small team of residents overseeing the construction of the new tennis / pickleball building . The permitting process with the city of Wilsonville is underway , but that could take many months . Most of the key construction materials were ordered two months ago . But some items take a long time to get through the supply chain . For example , the steel for support structures has a minimum sixmonth lead time . We hope for the best . The earliest date for completion of the new building is still July 2023 .

Resident volunteers :
By the end of 2023 , the number of tennis and pickleball players will likely double from just two years ago . The space and time available for yearround indoor play will have doubled too .
Kathi Gray , Tennis Club Board President , will lead the efforts to expand the club to over 200 members in the years ahead .
Debbie Stonebraker , Pickleball Club President , will lead the efforts to expand the club memberships to over 200 members in the years ahead .
Volunteer board members are critical to creating a welcoming and fun environment for residents and guests in the new and expanded Charbonneau Sports Center . Profiles of the resident board members will be highlighted in this column from time to time .
Kathi Gray , Tennis Club Facility Manager in 2022 , writes : Much of the success of the tennis center over the past years has been the key leadership position of the Charbonneau tennis club facility manager . As 2022 draws to a close , a new year brings new opportunities and new beginnings ! The end of 2022 also brings the end to my contract as manager of the tennis club . Reflecting on the challenges and the new opportunities that abound brings both sadness and great memories . As many residents
know , I took over from Steve Hall after his 16 years as tennis club manager . Steve ’ s abilities were really big shoes to fill ! I did my best to live up to his standard and kept us on an even keel , especially during the 2021 Covid shutdown . Monitoring players to keep Covid restrictions in place was a large part of 2021 . Thankfully , we had very little exposure to the Covid virus at the club . As always , members take pride in our club ! Volunteers continually step up and we all benefit from their time and talents . A new lobby design was implemented by volunteer members ; a donation of a flatscreen TV enables us to post timely announcements and events .
On a fun note , a wayward bat tried to take up residency on court one , which was quickly evicted when I threw a towel over him and escorted him out the door . Unfortunately , he tried to return , but a member quickly decided to eliminate the problem ! The truly great feature about this club is the members . We have members who have been here for the whole 40 years , who are now introducing their grandchildren to the sport . We are currently welcoming younger members and their families . It has been a fun and challenging experience for me , so thank you to the CCC Board , Charbonneau Tennis Club Board and especially all of the wonderful members that keep our club such a viable entity .
Please welcome our new facility manager , Donna Roisom . Her depth of experience will contribute greatly to the new Sports Center here at Charbonneau . We are all benefiting from the updates and changes to our Charbonneau lifestyle . Congratulations , Donna !
Donna Roisom , Sports Center Facility
Manager 2023 : Because the scope of work is expected to double , the CCC Board approved writing a new job description for a Sports Center Facility Manager and adding a half-time employee to the existing

The panel included members of the CCC Board , Tennis Club and Pickleball Club . Based on the interviews , it came down to choosing between the top three candidates . Jim offered the job to Donna , and she accepted the new position starting January 1 , 2023 .

After a hiatus to be a caregiver to her parents , Donna returned to Grant High School as the head girls tennis coach , winning district championships in 2021 and 2022 . With a move to Charbonneau , she accepted the independent contract to be the Head Tennis and Pickleball Pro at Charbonneau . Her personal goals for Charbonneau are :

Her hobbies are teaching tennis , playing tennis and golf , gardening , playing cards and games , pickleball and reading autobiographies
After decades of leadership in teaching , coaching , and administration , in 2019 she was selected to be the 13th recipient of the Lewis & Clark Hall of
Fame Lifetime Achievement and Leadership Award . Donna tells everyone , “ I moved to Charbonneau in August 2020 to experience having neighbors that actually said ‘ Hello ,’ checked in on one another , and had fun together . I am very excited to be a part of this lively community .”

With the completion of the new building , the Charbonneau Tennis Club memberships can be increased in 2023 . Tennis club membership are already highly valued and there is a waiting list for non-residents . However , there is NO waiting list for a Charbonneau resident to purchase a membership in the tennis club at any time of the year . Residents go to the front of the line .
There will be many challenges in 2023 for the new Sports Center at Charbonneau . Our 180-member tennis club will expand to 450-500 members between pickleball and tennis . Integrating the two sports in the shared building will no doubt be challenging . We are excited
