n January 2018, the bedchamber of Madison’s stepson John
Payne Todd was furnished to show him staying at Montpelier.
The installation is based primarily on documentary and physical
evidence, including a piece of wallpaper found behind the mantle
and a large fragment of grass matting found in the wall. Given
Todd’s struggles with alcoholism and depression, the room allows
us to talk about mental health and addiction during the period.
