A
custom-created French carpet was added to this room
representing one of the two the Madisons purchased from
France with the help of James Monroe. Combining the clues found
in several letters, we discovered that Monroe purchased the carpets
from the famed Savonnerie manufactory in 1795 and that the
carpets he purchased were designed in the mid-eighteenth century
or earlier. To create the carpet, we combined multiple extant
Savonnerie designs to create one generic design. A second French
carpet will be installed in the Drawing Room in 2018.
