Dolley ’s Bedchamber

e initially furnished this room as a library based on letters
between master builder James Dinsmore and James
Madison at the time of its construction in 1809-10. However,
numerous guest accounts indicate that it served as Dolley’s
bedchamber during the retirement period. In January 2017 we
updated its furnishings to show it in transition between the two
uses. Later in 2018, the room will be carpeted in reproduction
Wilton carpeting based on tacking evidence.
