Halton : Diamond Soror / Life Member
Mitchellville , MD – Soror Dora Spriggs Halton became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on August 5 , 2020 . She received an BS degree in mathematics education from Virginia State University and a Master of Science degree from New York University . Soror Halton was initiated into Alpha Epsilon Chapter in 1944 and remained active for 76 years . Her teaching career began in the Washington , DC public schools and she retired from the Prince George ' s County , MD public school system . Prior to joining Iota Gamma Omega Chapter , Soror Halton was a member of Xi Omega Chapter . She became a Diamond Soror in 2019 . She was a loyal supporter of her beloved alma mater and regularly attended homecoming . She was active in many civic and social organizations including , the National Council of Negro Women , Girl Scouts of America , the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics , The Moles , Inc ., and the Girl Friends . She enjoyed traveling , gardening , playing bridge , attending arts performances , and dancing . Soror Halton was preceded in death by her husband , Ernest , and is survived by two children and four grandchildren .
Hammons : Retired Educator / Pearl Soror
Detroit , MI – Pearl Soror Mary A . Hammons became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . She attended West Virginia State College for two years . Soror Hammons was initiated in Xi Chapter in 1953 and graduated from Michigan Normal School ( now Eastern Michigan University ). She earned her MA in education from the University of Detroit . Her career in teaching began in Flint , and after two years , she was hired by Detroit Public Schools , where her distinguished service led to a consulting position , training new teachers for DPS and serving on the Board of Education . Soror Hammons was a member of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter where she served faithfully . She also was a member of the Coalition of 100 Black Women , NAACP , New Detroit , The Optimist Club , and served on many Boards . Soror Hammons was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Charles , and leaves to cherish her memory three children- Rhonda , Kevin , and Charles ; brother , Maurice , grandson , Austin , and many other relatives and friends .
Hampton : Silver Star
Mound Bayou , MS – Soror Denise Jeanette Hampton became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . She was initiated into Gamma Phi Chapter on the campus of Alcorn State University . She later joined Chi Mu Omega Chapter in Mound Bayou , MS . She became a Siler Star on October 4 , 2016 . She received a Bachelor of Science degree in English Communications from Alcorn State University and did further studies at Delta State University where she was afforded the opportunity to complete an internship in broadcasting in New York City ; however , because of health challenges she was unable to fulfill this opportunity . She became a member of First Baptist Church at the age of five . She later joined two other churches but reunited with First Baptist Church . She was a member of the gospel choir , the Missionary Society and an ardent Sunday School scholar . Soror Hampton was preceded in death by her mother ; grandparents ; two sisters ; and one brother . Left to cherish her memories are her daughter , Kahi Hampton ; grandson , Kylan ; five brothers ; ten sisters ; her church family and sorority sisters .
Hardy : Retired Educator
Long Island , NY – Soror Lorraine B . Hardy of Theta Iota Omega Chapter became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 16 , 2020 . A native of Brooklyn , NY , Soror Hardy began her early career as a nurse , working as a licensed practical nurse in several New York hospitals . Soror Hardy then took a different path and enrolled in Adelphi University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History . Soror Hardy embarked on her lifelong passion of becoming an educator , working in the Brooklyn and NYC Public School systems . She remained committed to her work and the community until her retirement . Soror Hardy was a member of Theta Iota Omega Chapter , Suffolk / Nassau Counties , NY . Cherishing her memory are her family , friends , and Theta Iota Omega sorors .
Harris : Retired Educator
Osceola , AR – Soror Ruby Kennedy Harris became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on September 22 , 2020 . After attending Wilson Trade School in Wilson , AR , she went on to receive her bachelor ' s degree in Education from the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff . Soror Harris was later initiated into Lambda Sigma Omega Chapter . She taught reading and English for 18 years . Upon retiring she went on to become a bank teller at Bancorp South in the city of Osceola , Arkansas where she is still remembered for her infectious smile . After 15 years she spent most of her time with her family , church and the sorority . She and her husband of 33 years , Joe Harris Jr . had three sons together and were also involved in the raising of their two granddaughters . Her greatest passion was traveling the world with her granddaughters .
Harris : Retired IT Professional / Golden Soror
South Bend , IN – Soror Velma Harris became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on Sunday , November 15 , 2020 . She attended Sadie Victoria Thompson College in Tougaloo , MS and received a bachelor ' s degree . She relocated to South Bend , IN to work for the University of Notre Dame in information technology , where she later retired in 2002 . Soror Harris was a member of Eta Mu Omega Chapter , served as basileus and updated chapter documents . She was quiet yet outspoken and had a gentle smile and friendly persona . Her memory will be cherished by her eight siblings , family , friends , members at Greater St . John ' s Church and sorority sisters .
