Hawkins : Retired Educator
Richmond , VA – Soror Gloria Wheeler Hawkins became an Ivy Beyond the Wall at the age of 92 . She graduated in 1948 from what is now Fayetteville State University . In 1954 , she earned a master ' s degree from New York University . She taught in Georgia and Culpeper , VA , before accepting a teaching position with Richmond Public Schools where she retired in 1989 . Soror Hawkins was a positive influence on many of her students during her 40-year career . She was an active member of All Souls Presbyterian Church where she served as a Girl Scout leader , church elder and Sunday School teacher . Soror Hawkins was initiated into Upsilon Omega Chapter in 1982 and was an active member until her health declined . Her husband preceded her in death in 2013 . She leaves to cherish her memory , two daughters , a granddaughter , and a host of family and friends .
Henderson : Educator / Golden Soror
Grambling , LA – Soror Shirley Marie St . Andrews Henderson became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . She attended Xavier University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Grambling State College and a Master of Arts degree from the State University of Iowa . While at Grambling , she met and married Vernon Henderson . She enjoyed 47 plus years of teaching . " Shirley Marie ” - as some friends would call her , was an active member of St Benedict Catholic Church of Grambling , St Benedict Catholic Circle , and Golden and Life member of Epsilon Psi Omega Chapter . She is survived by her husband , Dr Vernon Henderson ; nieces and nephews , Marlene Kennerly , Francine Boutte ’, Carol Marburry , Victoria Blount and John Minor ; two dear friends who were like sisters , Jean G . Brown and Dr . Dorothy Hardy , and a special friend , Dr . Vicki R . Brown .
Hawthorne : Vocalist
Grambling , LA – Soror Betty Lou Williams Hawthorne became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . She attended Grambling College and Southern University where she received her bachelor ' s degree in vocal music . She also received her master ' s degree in vocal music from Louisiana State University . She was a member of New Rocky Valley Baptist Church where she served as pianist . She became a member of the sorority while attending Grambling College and was a member of Links . Inc .; Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity , and a Silhouette of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity , Inc . She leaves to cherish her memory her son , Keith Hawthorne , five grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews , and a host of relatives and friends .
Hayes : Diamond Soror / Past Basileus
Boston , MA – Diamond Soror and Life Member Florence Lucille Hayes became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on August 5 , 2020 , at the age of 98 . She received her BS in home economics from West Virginia State College , and an MS in home economics education from Simmons College in Boston . Soror Hayes was the first Black person to be permanently appointed as a home economics teacher in the Boston Public School System . She taught and supervised home economics instruction in sewing and cooking in elementary , middle , and high schools , and also adult education . She became director of career education in the Boston Public School System and taught sewing classes at the Harriet Tubman Community House . She taught sewing classes for army wives in Hanau , Germany ; and tailoring and sewing classes at the Boston Center for Adult Education . She held leadership positions serving as basileus of Psi Omega Chapter from 1957 until 1959 .
Hendricks : Entrepreneur / Breast Cancer Survivor
West Palm Beach , FL – Soror Michelle Maynor Hendricks became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on December 3 , 2020 . She attended Florida A & M University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and business administration . After graduating from college she worked in advertising , human resources , and pharmaceutical sales . In addition , Soror Hendricks was also an entrepreneur , and the proud owner of The Mayn Event , where she experienced success for over 20 years in the event planning industry . As an initiate into Zeta Tau Omega Chapter in 2016 , Soror Hendricks was an active member who served on several committees , one of them being health & wellness . As the cochairman of the committee , she shared her personal experience of being a breast cancer survivor and being selected by the Susan G . Komen Foundation as a Warrior in Pink . Among her greatest accomplishments , Soror Hendricks enjoyed being a mother more than anything else in life .
Hodge : Educator / Librarian / Silver Star
Durham , NC – Soror Gassennie Margaret Webb Hodge became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 9 , 2020 . She was initiated into the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter in 1986 . Soror Hodge attended Alabama State University in Montgomery , Alabama , where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree . She received her master ' s degree in library science from North Carolina Central University . She moved to Durham where she became a librarian until she retired after 26 years . She was a longtime member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church where she sang in the church Celestial choir . She was also a member of the Friends of the Library , Glory Girls Book Club and Daughter of Ruth Sunday School Class . Soror Hodge served on many committees with the chapter including the arts and music and chapter anniversary committee along with chairing the nomination committee . Those to cherish her memories include her sisters and brothers , her husband , Oliver Lee Hodge , Sr ., sons Oliver Lee Hodge , Jr ., ( Cynthia ), Roderick Van Hodge , ( Pamela ) and grandchildren .
