Mu Kappa Omega Hosts Virtual AKA Caregivers Day
Missouri City , TX – Mu Kappa Omega Chapter held its first virtual AKA Caregivers Impact Day event via Facebook Live , highlighting chapter sorors who serve as caregivers . Sorors answered questions pertaining to their personal experience of being a caregiver . The event emphasized the need for caregivers to practice preventive healthcare . It is important for caregivers to get away to gain perspective and tend to their emotional needs . Soror Cedrina Ruffin , a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist shared some self-care tips to eliminate the vulnerabilities and risks associated with the stress of caregiving . The event was held in collaboration with Target 2 : Women ' s Healthcare and Wellness , and Mu Kappa Omega ' s efforts to increase community awareness of health issues impacting African American women . Care for caregivers places emphasis on taking care of those who take care of others . The Family Caregiver Alliance : National Center on Caregiving reports that approximately 44 million Americans provide 37 billion hours of unpaid , " informal " care each year for adult family members and friends with chronic illnesses or conditions that prevent them from handling daily activities . Family caregivers , particularly women , provide over 75 % of caregiving support in the United States and experience the greatest emotional stress . Female caregivers are at risk for high levels of stress , anxiety , exhaustion and anger , depression , poor physical health and more chronic conditions , neglecting their own care and have higher mortality rates compared to non-caregivers .
Alpha Alpha Nu Omega Hosts Virtual Connection Events
Round Rock , TX – Alpha Alpha Nu Omega Chapter Connection Committee , chaired by Soror Cynthia S . Harry , engaged in voter and election actions . The chapter implemented the AKAs L . E . A . D . ( Learn , Empower , Advocate and Decide ) campaign to help ensure Williamson County ,

Texas communities understood the issues impacting the elections and were empowered to exercise their right to vote . Alpha Alpha Nu Omega utilized the chapter ' s social media outlets for sharing of voter registration , transfer procedures , absentee voting , county and state election dates , and contact information for current county and state office candidates . The chapter spread the " Get Out The Vote " message by sharing county and statewide websites to assist residents with polling locations , registration , and mail-in ballot deadlines . Additionally , Alpha Alpha Nu Omega hosted several virtual connection events . On National Voter Registration Day , the " Voter Information Forum and Game Night " event covered voting deadlines , guidelines , and mail-in ballot concerns ; and ended with a game of election trivia . Sorors gathered virtually for a " Vice President Debate Watch Party " and an " Election Results Watch Party with Disc Jockey ". The Alpha Alpha Nu Omega Chapter exercised the right to vote and encouraged others to vote . The chapter went HIGH , Strolled to the Polls , and got into GOOD TROUBLE !!
Omicron Tau Omega Hosts Target 4 : The ARTS !
Spring , TX - Omicron Tau Omega Target 4 , The ARTS ! committee hosted their 2nd annual “ The Great AKA Read ." Participants met virtually to have an in-depth discussion about the book , Plum Bun by Jessie Redmon Fauset . Plum Bun was written at the height of the Harlem Renaissance in 1928 and tells the story of Angela , a young African American woman who discovers that she can pass for white . The novel exemplifies the cultural , social , and creative ferment of the Harlem Renaissance . Ms . Cynthia Fairbanks , director of Social Studies Curriculum in Houston Independent School District , along with Target 4 Committee
Omicron Tau Omega Chapter members and the Spring , TX community participate in the virtual Great AKA Read .

Theta Omega Spearheads Coalition to Reduce Breast Cancer
Chicago , IL – Theta Omega Chapter and the AKArama Foundation Breast Cancer Awareness sub-committee along with local community partners , including the University of Illinois at Chicago Cancer Clinic , Northwestern University Comprehensive Cancer Center , the University of Chicago Office of Community Engagement and Cancer Health Equity , Cancer Research and Awareness , Beyond A Mammogram , and Equal Hope meet monthly to discuss and identify ways to reduce breast cancer mortality rates among Black women . Black women pass away from breast cancer at a 40 % higher rate than white women . The coalition is developing a plan to work with the Illinois Department of Public Health and partner agencies to get Black women in the Chicagoland area free mammogram and ovarian cancer screens through funding secured through the Illinois Breast and
