Alpha Kappa Omega Holds # CAP SM Dow Promise Summit
Presented by Dr . Cherry Ross Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter presented its first virtual # CAP SM Dow Promise Summit with the event providing tools that will equip participants for various college experiences and workforce opportunities .
Houston , TX – Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter presented its first virtual # CAP SM Dow Promise Summit . The greeting was delivered by Soror Cherise Story , President , and Soror Angela Lundy-Jackson presented an overview of the # CAP SM program . Over 350 students from high school campuses participated in the summit . A message was presented by Dr . Cherry Ross Gooden , retired professor , Texas Southern University , which was focused on being resilient , tenacious , and prepared . Participants selected two breakout sessions based on their interest from the following subjects : Building Your Brand — Why It is Important , Campus Life — An Undergraduate ' s Perspective , Exploring Well-Being — Positive Mental Health in Today ' s World , Financial Literacy — Learning More about Money , Savings , and Credit and possible Careers with the Dow Corporation . Each session was facilitated by our chapter sorors . Students left the event with tools that will equip them with college experiences and workforce opportunities . # CAP SM Scholarship Workshop was held at Madison High School and served 27 students during an informative scholarship workshop led by Ashley Turnage , HISD college readiness manager . Students were informed of the importance of applying for as many scholarships as possible and received tips on how to craft awardwinning essays that tell their story . Students also learned the dos and don ' ts of essay writing and were extended the opportunity to have the # CAP SM committee provide feedback before submitting final admissions and scholarship applications .
Xi Alpha Omega Hosts 17th Annual Evelyn Ware Math & Science Institute
Houston , TX – Xi Alpha Omega Chapter with the Ivy League Educational & Charities Foundation , held the 17th Annual Evelyn Ware Math & Science ( EWMS ) Institute . The event was held virtually via the " At Home Edition ", where 75 students , grades 6 through 8 , across the metro-Houston area were provided science kits to conduct five educational experiments safely in the comfort of their own homes . The students were able to watch a video recording of live demonstrations of each science experiment being conducted by a member of the Evelyn Ware Math & Science committee . Chi Omicron Omega Holds Virtual Art Contest
Katy , TX – To educate local students about the Harlem Renaissance , Chi Omicron Omega Chapter ' s Target 4 : The Arts , hosted a virtual art contest based on the " Rendition of The Harlem Renaissance ," previously known as the New Negro Movement . All submissions were original art pieces that embodied the artist ' s view of African American culture and identity . Submissions came from the Katy , Alief , Cypress-Fairbanks , West Houston , and the Richmond , Texas area . All participants had to create a digital image , scan , and upload their submissions . Submissions from 38 students ranging from pre-k to 12th grade participated . A panel of judges reviewed all submissions virtually . Students shared an array of artistic skills and abilities in drawings , paintings , and mixed materials . We were proud to award six winners with gift cards and all contestants were mailed certificates of appreciation for their participation .

Gamma Omega Omega Impacts 2020 Holiday Season
LaMarque , TX – Gamma Omega Omega Chapter celebrated the 2020 Holiday season kicking off our virtual celebration for our 50th anniversary . The chapter received numerous virtual well wishes from chapters and sorors in the region while viewing a video montage . It was followed with -Home for the Holidays- virtual crafting fundraiser . Participants learned DIY activities to prepare their homes for the upcoming holiday season . These included wreathmaking , tablescape decor & settings , healthy holiday desserts , and Christmas tree decor . We aimed to engage and prepare our community for intimate gatherings at home that promoted activities that can be prepared as a family . The Christmas project , headed up by Soror Ashley Geters and Soror Temi Newton , consisted of repurposing 50 Ivy Boxes filled with toiletry items for True Courage Men ' s Shelter , a transitioning center for men . We received 50 blankets from Anderson Diaz , PLLC & 50 dental kits from Gulfside Dental & Orthodontics as donations towards our projects . Target II Chair Soror Sandra Green and volunteers , organized delivery of snack boxes , gift baskets , and water for 16 residents of Pathway to Recovery Women Drug & Alcohol Treatment Center , which is nationally known for its innovative & unique approach to treating addiction .
