Myers Elected as Hillsborough County Commissioner
Soror Gwen Myers won the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners District 3 race . An early and strong advocate for the All for Transportation Plan , Soror Myers has served on Tampa Mayor Jane Castor ' s African American Advisory Council , the Hillsborough County Health Care Advisory Board , the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center Council , the Corporation to Develop Communities ( CDC ) of Tampa , as well as civic organizations like the League of Women Voters and the West Tampa Chamber of Commerce . Soror Myers is a member of Gamma Theta Omega Chapter , Life Member , former International Building and Properties Chairman and chapter basileus .
Nixon Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award
Soror Bertine ( Bunny ) Nixon , a member of Lambda Nu Omega Chapter , Waukegan , IL was honored for her achievements . Soror Nixon was on GLCU ' s Board of Directors after almost 30 years of service . While she is no longer a director on the board , she was given the emeritus board member status . This status , the first awarded by the credit union , honors a long-term and active board member . Soror Nixon began serving GLCU while she was the technical director in the military medical support office at the Great Lakes Naval Base , the credit union ' s original location , and continued her service to GLCU while achieving many professional and personal achievements . For her lifelong commitment to the credit union movement , she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame . Soror Nixon is a Silver Star and spends her time volunteering in the community .
Quarles Appointed First African American to Serve
Soror Nancy Quarles , PhD , Pi Tau Omega Chapter , was appointed as a new member to the Oakland County Road Commission . Soror Quarles is the first African American to serve on the Road Commission . As the Vice Chairman , Soror Quarles will be serving to maintain over more than 2,700 miles of county roads , over 230 miles of state highways and approximately 1,500 county , city and state traffic signals in Oakland County in Michigan . She has served her community in various capacities , as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives and on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners , as well as a professor at Central Michigan University . Soror Quarles will be leading the way in implementing improvements for Michigan ' s roads , road maintenance , and maximizing road funding for the cities residing in Oakland County .
Raines Selected as HBCU Alumni Ambassador
Soror MiKayla Raines , 2019 initiate of the Lambda Omega Chapter , has been selected as an HBCU Times Alumni Brand Ambassador . As an ambassador , Soror MiKayla will assist the HBCU Times to increase its brand recognition of the magazine by participating in events on social media and other digital platforms . She will have opportunities to write articles , engage in blogging and be featured on the HBCU Times website and all of their
Celebrating 100 Years of Ivy Leaf ® Magazine social media platforms . Soror Raines will help to create positive narratives and support for all HBCUs . She will use motivation , creativity , and talent to capture the true essence of the HBCU spirit . Soror Raines is a twotime Fayetteville State University alumni , graduating at the age of 18 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology , along with a minor in Spanish , and an MBA at the age of 21 with a concentration in marketing .
Ralls-Morrison Appointed to Board
Soror Desiree Ralls-Morrison , a member of Omicron Upsilon Omega Chapter in Stamford Norwalk , CT , was appointed to the Board of Directors of DICK ' S Sporting Goods . Inc . Her appointment comes at a pivotal time in the company ' s history as DICK ' S continues to meet the evolving needs of their customers and key stakeholders . As a director of DICK ’ S , she is responsible for helping the company set broad goals , supporting executive duties and ensuring the company has adequate , well-managed resources at its disposal . Soror Ralls-Morrison received her undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Wesleyan University and a JD from Harvard Law School . She is currently the senior vice president , general counsel and corporate secretary of Boston Scientific . In her role as general counsel of Boston Scientific , Soror Ralls-Morrison oversees all legal and compliance matters , globally . In her newly appointed board seat , she said " I ' m delighted to be joining the board at DICK ' S at a time of such dynamic growth for the company ."
Reid Elected to Board of Education
Soror Carlene D . Reid , Ed . D ., a member of Xi Zeta Omega Chapter , was elected as the Ward 8 Representative to the D . C . State Board of Education . An experienced educator of 15 years , Soror Reid ran on an inclusive platform of all community stakeholders in the Ward 8 community . She received several vetted endorsements including the support of the Washington Teachers ' Union and the D . C . Women in Politics . Soror Reid was in sworn into office in January 2021 .
Rhoten Leads the Way
Pearl Member Juliana T . Rhoten received the Wall Street Journal ' s prestigious Marquis Who ' s Who Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contributions in the field of education in the Milwaukee Public Schools . Her career spanned four decades , she worked as a teacher , reading specialist and principal . A highlight of her career was a documentary about her reading program that she assisted in producing in 1971 entitled , " You Wouldn ' t Believe It , But Here It Is ." During this period , she became a producer of an educational radio program . Soror Rhoten has been an active member of Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter since 1956 where she served as , epistoleus , grammateus , anti-basileus , basileus and an awardwinning historian . She ’ s a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development , Administrators and Supervision Council , National Council of Teachers of English , International Literacy Association , and Phi Beta Kappa . She serves on the board of directors for the local Eisenhower Group . Soror Rhoten earned her bachelor ' s and master ' s degrees at Hunter College and a master ' s in special education at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee .
