Fields Named First Woman Vice President
Soror Valerie S . Fields is the first woman to serve as vice president in the University of Louisiana ( ULM ) Monroe ' s 89-year history . ULM President Ronald Berry , D . B . A ., requested a waiver of the national search to fill the position in light of Soror Fields ' expertise and accomplishments . President Berry said , " she brings a level of success and professionalism to the leadership team that will be impactful ." A native of Winnsboro , Louisiana , she holds degrees from ULM , M . Ed ., and an Ed . S . in administration and supervision , a BA in early childhood / elementary education , Southern University A & M College ; and an Ed . D . in curriculum and instruction from Louisiana Tech University . She has served as chief academic and student affairs officers , an associate professor , middle school coordinator , and first executive director of Louisiana Campus Compact . She is founder of Valiant Achieving Leaders , LLC , an education management consulting company . Soror Fields is a Silver and Life member of Nu Tau Omega Chapter ' s 2019-2020 leadership team .
Gaynor-Vessels Appointed to Council
Soror L . Inez Gaynor-Vessels , a member of Xi Omega Chapter in Washington , DC , was appointed by Chancellor Harold L . Martin to serve on the Inaugural Council on Alumni Relations for her alma mater , North Carolina A & T State University . This appointment came after a rigorous selection process in which over 400 alumni sought consideration . Ultimately 15 alumni from around the country were chosen to serve a two-year term . The council replaces the previous Alumni Association as part of the reimagining of the university ' s organized interactions with its alumni . Council members work with the university ' s Office of Alumni Relations by providing feedback that enhances programming for alumni engagement . Additionally , council members will act as brand ambassadors representing A & T and will share the mission and goals of the university with other alumni , friends and donors .
Gibson Named Member of the Year
Soror Cherie Gibson was named Member of the Year by WTS-Washington , D . C . The annual award recognizes outstanding women in the transportation industry and acknowledges women who have made extraordinary contributions to the WTS-DC chapter . She serves as the corporate relations and program sponsorship chair at WTS-DC , leading the chapter ' s efforts to broaden regional industry participation in its work to support women in transportation through professional opportunities , networking , and educational programs . Soror Gibson is the Mid-Atlantic communications director for HNTB and has worked in transportation for more than 20 years , supporting the delivery of some of the Washington , DC region ' s most significant transportation projects . Soror Gibson also serves as hodegos of the Xi Zeta Omega Chapter in Washington , DC .
Hanson Receives Alumni Award
Soror Piia T . Hanson , MSPH , MBA was recently honored as the recipient of the 2020 Edward A . Parnell Outstanding Alumnus Service Award by the University of Maryland Global Campus ( UMGC ) Alumni Association . Each year , this award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exemplary support of the University and the Alumni Association , and whose efforts have made a positive impact . Celebrating 100 Years of Ivy Leaf ® Magazine her local work purchasing and renovating investment properties to provide safe , affordable housing for families , and her international volunteer work providing medications and program support in rural communities , she is committed to ensuring that all families have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive . Soror Hanson was initiated at Pi Mu Chapter , and is a Silver Star .
Harris Featured in WomLEAD Magazine
Soror Virginia W . Harris , national president of National Coalition of 100 Black Women , Incorporated ( NCBW ) was featured on the cover of WomLEAD magazine . WomLEAD targets women who are in business and leadership . Soror Harris was one of 25 remarkable women recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in celebration of Women ’ s History Month . The NCBW leader had an opportunity to share her professional story and the impact she and her organization ’ s more than 3,500 members have made supporting black women and girls around the country . This special recognition for Soror Harris comes as the organization continues to see that more work needs to be done when it comes to women ’ s rights and gender equality . Speaking out against anti-voter rights bills that are making their way through state legislatures across the country has been a top priority . She received a master ’ s degree in public administration , a bachelor ’ s degree in business administration , and is also a graduate of Georgia ’ s Regional Leadership Institute , Leadership Atlanta , Leadership Gwinnett and Graduate of Harvard Non-Profit Leadership Program . She is a Life Member and a member of Nu Lambda Omega Chapter .
Hayslett Honored During Black History Month
Soror Gay Hayslett , a Silver Star member of Iota Gamma Omega Chapter in Lanham , MD , was honored at the 2020 Black History Month program sponsored by Arlington County Public Schools for being a trailblazer in her community . She attended Arlington County Public Schools where she participated in basketball , track and field , and cheerleading . Soror Hayslett is a graduate of Norfolk State University where she played on the 1976 CIAA championship women ' s basketball team and was initiated into Delta Epsilon Chapter . After graduation , she began teaching , and later , joined the Arlington County Police Department and trained at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy . She was the first black female Honor Guard member and Honor Guard Commander , as well as the first black female to be promoted to the rank of sergeant and earn the rank of lieutenant . She served with distinction for 31 years with the Arlington County Police Department . Soror Hayslett is chairman of the chapter ’ s Angel Tree Program which provides toys to underserved families in Prince George ' s County , MD .
Jefferson Leads Virtual Academy
Soror Carla Malloy Jefferson has been appointed to lead the Darlington County Virtual Academy ( DCVA ) as interim director in Darlington , SC . The district created the DCVA to accommodate students who choose not to participate in face-to-face instruction during this pandemic . Presently , DCVA serves 3,600 students . Jefferson says , " Darlington County School District has afforded me an amazing opportunity to lead the DCVA . When technology is blended with academic content and instruction , students have an opportunity to excel .
