CHAPTER NEWS forum that featured a talk by cardiologist , Dr . Sharayne Mark Coffin of Penn Medicine on facts and statistics associated with women ' s health , including heart disease , diabetes , high cholesterol , obesity , poor nutrition , inactivity , alcohol , and tobacco abuse , as well as the role of family history and genetics . The program ended with a live culinary demonstration for preparing a heart healthy soul food meal led by chef Dee Capers . ITO celebrated Community Impact Day : Dr . Martin Luther King Jr ., Day of Service with Community Excellence Awards and donations honoring two organizations and their leadership : Good Samaritan Services — Cheryl Miles , Director of Housing Support Services , and Chester County OIC — Joyce Chester , President and CEO . Good Samaritan Services helps people who are homeless and at risk of becoming homeless . Chester County OIC works to improve the lives of disadvantaged adults by creating educational and employment opportunities to help them prepare for sustainable employment and financial independence through education , training , and support services .

Sigma Tau Omega Hosts Heart Health Events for Pink Goes Red
Cary , NC – More than 120 women participated in Sigma Tau Omega Chapter ' s " Rebalance Your Heart Health !" and " Slow Flow Afro Yoga " events as part of Pink Goes Red Community Impact Day . Organized by the Target 2 : Women ' s Healthcare and Wellness committee , both programs were hosted virtually and featured experts from the Triangle region of North Carolina . Dr . Aqeila Shepard , a chiropractic physician who practices with an emphasis on functional medicine , the psychosomatic response , sports medicine , and neurology , was the featured presenter for the Rebalance Your Heart Health program on February 5 , 2021 .

She shared critical information and statistics related to heart disease in women , and provided healthy strategies , such as physical activities , nutrition , stress management tips and self-care practices . The discussion incorporated interactive trivia with participants around health scenarios , such as signs of a heart attack and stroke . The second Pink Goes Red activity , " Slow Flow Afro Yoga ", was held on February 20 , 2021 . The event was an R & B inspired yoga activity in collaboration with Zailene Flood , certified yoga instructor and owner of Flood Flow LLC . The afternoon incorporated a heart opening yoga flow , while participants enjoyed R & B music . The instructor also shared information on how mindfulness promotes a healthy heart .

Chapters Collaborate for Global Impact Day
Roxboro , NC – Mu Omicron Omega ( Chapel Hill ), Psi Gamma Omega ( Hillsborough ), and Sigma Nu Omega ( Roxboro ) Chapters made a major impact on the sorority ' s third international Global Impact Day on April 9 , 2021 . This year marks the third year Mu Omicron Omega has donated infant and toddler diapers for families who receive assistance at the Refugee Support Center in Carrboro , N . C . Annually , the U . S . Department of State resettles approximately 1,000 refugees into the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community , and Orange County . The Refugee Support Center is a volunteer organization that helps local refugees ' transition to living in the United States . Refugees primarily are from Burma , the Democratic Republic of Congo , and Syria . They depend on the center for essentials during their first three months while they seek employment . This year when area chapters sought service opportunities they could engage in safely , Mu Omicron Omega invited the Hillsborough and Roxboro , NC chapters to collaborate with them . Technology was in full effect as chapter members used social media to publicize the diaper drive and a link was provided to Amazon for purchases and delivery to a designated storage facility . The chapters collected over 11,000 diapers , plus monetary donations , to purchase additional diapers . Additionally , a Mu Omicron Omega soror and dermatologist donated hundreds of deodorants , shampoo , detergent , body wash , and lotion samples for Global Impact Day . Across three years , over 20,000 diapers have been donated , making the three AKA chapters a major supporter for families through the Refugee Center .
Mu Omicron Omega Responds During the Pandemic
Chapel Hill , NC – Mu Omicron Omega Chapter addressed challenges pandemic through Targets 1 , 2 , 3 , and 5 . We love our HBCUs and we donated $ 1,000 each to Bennett College for Women and St . Augustine ' s University . An attorney conducted a one-time , virtual information session for small , minority business owners . The chapter joined in to continue several weekly sessions collaborating with Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce , EmPOWERment , Inc ., NCCU Business and Technical Development Center , the law firm , and a professor at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School . Sessions helped small business owners understand the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program , and successful application and funding to restore their businesses .
