Frederick : Retired Educator / Life Member / Pearl Soror
Brooklyn , NY – Soror Mildred Mae Hall Frederick , of Psi Lambda Omega Chapter , became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 4 , 2021 . Charter , Life , and Pearl member with 73 years of service , Soror Fredrick , was initiated in Gamma Delta Chapter of Johnson C . Smith University in 1948 , where she earned her bachelor ' s degree in 1951 . She was a pre-school teacher and was instrumental in the " Dress for Success and Thanksgiving Baskets " programs and supported targets with her time and resources . She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church , serving in many ministries . She was married to Alvin Frederick for 49 years until his passing . She is survived by her daughters , Denise G . Frederick , Cynthia F . Whittenburg ; and son Carlton D . Frederick .
Garrett : Chapter Chairman
Norcross GA – Soror Cameo Yvette Garrett became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . Soror Garrett received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Georgia in 1992 . She continued her education by obtaining a Master of Public Administration from Troy University in 2010 . Following her mother ' s footsteps , Soror Garrett was initiated in Psi Omega Omega Chapter , located in Peachtree Corners , Georgia . She was one of the inaugural members of the first membership intake process of the chapter . Soror Garrett served dutifully in various chapter positions , including the executive committee , sisterly relations , and program committee . In addition , she served as chairman of the public relations committee in her role as the chapter ' s Ivy Leaf ® reporter .
Fye : Retired Educator / Life Member
Fort Lauderdale , FL – Soror Lillie Mae Allen Fye became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Bethune Cookman ( College ) University in 1954 . During her 44-year teaching career , she was named a finalist for Broward County Teacher of the Year in 2000 . She was a proud educator . Soror Fye was initiated in Zeta Rho Omega in 1990 and served on various committees . She was a member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church , where she served as chairman and member on many celebratory arts committees . Additionally , she was selected as a Pioneer of Broward by the Elder ' s Council . Soror Fye was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years , Robert , and her daughter Robin . Her memory is cherished by her daughter Soror Johnnye Fye Bell and grandsons William , Robert , and John Jazz .
Gaines : Educator / Guidance Counselor / Diamond Soror
Winston-Salem , NC – Soror Clara B . Gaines , 95 , a former resident of Winston-Salem for 73 years , became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 11 , 2021 . She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years , Clarence ' Big House ' Gaines , legendary CIAA basketball coach . Soror Gaines was initiated in her sophomore year into Iota Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh . She received her Master of Arts degree at Teachers College at Columbia University in New York in 1949 . She furthered her education at Wake Forest and Tufts Universities . In Winston-Salem , Soror Gaines joined Phi Omega Chapter . She was recognized as a Diamond Soror at Phi Omega ' s 95th anniversary in 2019 . She taught Latin and English at Atkins HS and later became a guidance counselor at East Forsyth . She was a member of The Links Inc ., St . Paul UMC , and an honorary member of Reynolda Rotary . She volunteered at SECCA , Meals-On-Wheels , YMCA , Jack , and Jill , and was a NC Museum of History Associate . She is survived by her children , Soror Lisa McDonald and Clarence Jr ., and their families .
Gilchrist : International Graduate Advisor Certification Chairman
Decatur , GA – Soror Joyce Rush Gilchrist , 66 , became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on January 4 , 2021 . Soror Gilchrist was initiated in Psi Chapter in spring 1974 at Benedict College . She was a member of Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter , where she held local , regional , and international offices . Soror Gilchrist was the graduate advisor of Nu Beta Chapter at Georgia Institute of Technology . Her most recent appointment was the International graduate advisor certification chairman . She was also a member of Gate City Chapter # 48 O . E . S ., where she served as Matron . She was the current grand conductress of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter O . S . S . for the Jurisdiction of Georgia . She was also a member of Nabbar Court # 123 ( daughters ) and Esther R . Walters Assembly # 24A The Order of The Golden Circle . Preceded in death by her husband Arthur ( Randy ) Gilchrist , Soror Joyce leaves to cherish her memory , her sons , Eric J . Gilchrist and Dr . Christopher L . ( Paula ) Gilchrist , Ed . D ., and a host of other family and friends .
Gillenwater : Retired Special Education Pioneer / Golden Soror / Life Member
Richmond , VA – Soror Willie Harris Gillenwater became an Ivy Beyond the Wall at 91 . Soror Gillenwater completed her degree in education at Virginia Union University , earning her master ' s degree in special education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1969 . Soror Gillenwater taught in Richmond and surrounding counties , eventually turning her focus to special education , becoming among the first 10 teachers in the state of Virginia and Richmond to earn the special education certification . During her nearly 36-year career in education , she rose to become an administrator in Richmond ' s Exceptional Education Department before retiring in the early 1990s . In retirement , she was active in local and state education associations . Her affiliations included the Virginia Historical Society , Woodville Presbyterian Church , All Souls Presbyterian Church , and the Presbytery of the James . Soror Gillenwater was initiated into Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter and was a faithful member of Upsilon Omega Chapter in Richmond , VA . Her husband Ballard and son Lynn preceded her in death .
