Xi Nu Omega ’ s Monarch Awards Foundation held its 16th annual community feeding during the pandemic .
Chicago , IL – The 2020 worldwide coronavirus pandemic forced Xi Nu Omega ' s Monarch Awards Foundation ( MAF ) to reimagine its 16th Annual Community Feeding . Due to social distancing edicts and Corporate Office pronouncements , MAF employed day laborers to unload trucks and pack containers for distribution , in an ingenious pivot , since members were unable to do either . After receiving more than $ 75,000 in donations , event co-chairmen Courtney Hill and Chiymelle Proby Nunn coordinated the preparation of 700 food baskets and wellness kits — including 500 pairs of shoes — for delivery to seven schools and social service agencies for families they serve . Additionally , each day laborer received a care package and the MAF provided box lunches to the nearby Chicago Police 7th District station as a token of thanks . This program began in 2005 , as a means of providing a few hundred Englewood community residents with a free holiday meal . The event grew to include grocery distribution , health and wellness exhibits , clothing and outerwear giveaways , and more . Englewood is one of Chicago ' s poorest and most dangerous communities . COVID-19 disproportionately affected Englewood residents , who are often essential workers with limited childcare options .
