CHAPTER NEWS service project . The " Excellent " work done by Target 3 AKA Assist Committee Chairman Kima Letcher , in collaboration with a local non-profit organization , guided the chapter in donations to provide enough furnishings for two single mothers in need . Donated items included but were not limited to beds , bed sets , washer / dryer , TVs , complete bathroom sets , cookware , microwaves , dining room sets , and school supplies for the children . Chapter members donated the items and completely installed the items for the recipients in a one-day project . Under the leadership of Basileus Velena L . McRae , the chapter has been diligent in its service efforts to offer hope and bring about better conditions to those in the community .

Houston , TX – Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter was awarded the Golden Apple Service Award by Houston Independent School District . During the celebration of its Volunteers in Public Schools program , 50th anniversary themed " Honoring the Past , Recognizing the Present , Shaping the Future ," the chapter was honored as a community partner and supporter of public education . This award is significant since it ' s the first for the awards program . In the Expanding Horizons group , the chapter recognition provided college and career opportunities for high school students , changed their lives with transformative experiences , and helped them envision careers and skills for the future . The chapter members have considerably impacted students , leading them to productive lives through awarding scholarships , tutoring , giving donations , or engaging students in our service programs . Chapter members are committed to Houston ISD students and champion their cause for literacy and excellence in all academic pursuits . Basileus Cherise Story gave the charge to other sororities , fraternities , and corporations to join the volunteer program , promote education and continue engagement with Houston ISD and advancement of its students .
Houston Chapters Host Virtual World Refugee Day Program
Houston , TX – Xi Alpha Omega and Alpha Kappa Omega chapters collaborated to host a virtual " Prelude to World Refugee Day " panel discussion . This panel discussion brought awareness of the refugee journey , refugee experiences in Houston , and the importance of organizations that assist in the resettlement process for refugees . The panel discussion , moderated by Soror Tejuana Edmond , and live question-and-answer session featured three Houston-area refugee organizations that directly support the needs of refugees . Missouri City , TX – Mu Kappa Omega Chapter ' s Target 5 : Global Impact Committee focused on refugees of color in the United States by partnering with global organizations that assist refugees and their families in integrating into American life .
