Protecting Your Crown : Getting to the Root of Hair Discrimination hosted by Alpha Zeta Omega via Zoom . of African American women and girls in the workplace and schools . Over 200 participants attended " Protecting Your Crown : Getting to the Root of Hair Discrimination ," held via Zoom . A group of panelists provided insight from different perspectives on the topic including , NC Representative Vernetta Alston , co-sponsor of NC House Bill 170 ; natural hair specialist Glenda Jones ; and Dr . Ashleigh Rosette , associate dean at The Fuqua School of Business , Duke University , who has conducted extensive research on hair discrimination . Because this is a serious matter , the chapter is committed to the ongoing advocacy for protecting our glorious crowns and , more importantly , our rights . The event concluded with a call to action from the chapter Connection Committee . Participants were encouraged to 1 ) visit thecrownact . com for additional resources , 2 ) send letters to elected officials using the sample letter presented as a guide , 3 ) sign the CROWN Coalition petition to end race-based hair discrimination , and 4 ) celebrate National CROWN Day on July 3 .
Kappa Iota Omega Celebrates Youth Mentoring Groups
Garysburg , NC – The Budding Roses and AKAGents Committee of the Kappa Iota Omega Chapter hosted an " Ice Cream & Inspirations " virtual event for twenty-one youth . Youth were celebrated for their outstanding achievements throughout the school year . The event started with an ice cream musical and ended with a motivational video . Sorors Sheena Jerman , chairman , and Marla Jerman , co-chairman , served as hostesses . Prior to the activity , the committee gifted the youth and special guest , Nadine Vargas Stewart , with a " Taste of AKA " treat box for the budding roses and a tuxedo graphic bag for the AKAGents . The treat box included an affirmation from Psalms 139:14 , an array of treasures , and a gift card to purchase items to make hand-tossed homemade ice cream . In addition , they received a copy of the special edition of the Good News newsletter featuring the youth ' s special assignments and personal accomplishments . The goals for the child are to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards . Attendees enjoyed ice cream after a slide show introducing the youth , their parents , and chapter mentors . AKAGent , Cameron Byrd conducted a game of Kahoot after the dynamic message from Nadine Vargas Stewart , " Things I Wished Someone Would Have Told Me ." Sorors Waynette Kimball , president , and Shana Brown , vice-president , extend thanks to our youth , parents , chapter , committee , and distinguished guests .
Zeta Mu Omega Presents Scholarships and Educational Awards
Gastonia , NC – Zeta Mu Omega Chapter presented scholarships for 2021 to 13 young ladies who participated in their 2019 Debutante Ball . During

their participation , the young ladies were juniors in high school and recently graduated from high schools in Gastonia , Shelby , Kings Mountain , and Charlotte Areas . Scholarships presented for the 2021 year totaled $ 20,207.00 , and Educational Assistance Awards totaled $ 20,357.00 for a total of $ 40,564.00 in scholarships and awards . In addition , Miss Chloe Reid , who was crowned the 2019 Debutante Queen of the Ball , received a scholarship and educational assistance award in the amount of $ 10,123.00 . She will attend North Carolina A & T State University

Gamma Beta Omega Hosts Building Your Economic Legacy
Wilson , NC – Gamma Beta Omega Chapter hosted an Economic Legacy webinar to inform members of the chapter and the community of economic opportunities available for citizens of Wilson County . Speaker for the event was Representative Linda Cooper-Suggs of the North Carolina State Legislature , serving District 24 of Wilson County . She shared information on bills in the general assembly , economic development , Medicaid expansion , and federal recovery plans and how they impact Wilson County . Representative Cooper- Suggs stated that Wilson County citizens are in an affordable housing crisis , living in a food desert and an energy burdened zone . She stated that we could help by investing our time , talent , and resources , getting voters registered , educating them and getting them to the polls , and donating to local organizations that invest in our community . The 21 participants left the webinar equipped with information on economic opportunities available to the community .
