Akinduro Wins Emmy Award
Soror Samantha Akinduro , NBC4 Washington DC affiliate-content producer , was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Newscast in a large market . The award was given for her work on the broadcast " America in Crisis : News 4 at 6 ." This was days after the murder of George Floyd as protests ignited across the country . Soror Akinduro is a producer in the Prince George ' s County Bureau and brings hard-hitting local stories to life daily . This was her very first Emmy nomination and win . Soror Akinduro was initiated into the Gamma Theta Chapter in 2007 . She is a charter member of Alpha Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter located in Prince George ' s County , serving the Hyattsville / College Park area , and currently serves as anti-basileus .
Anderson Hired as First Director
Soror Tamya Anderson of Psi Epsilon Omega Chapter is the first-ever Director of Cultural Competency and Inclusion at Elizabeth Seton High School . She is an alumna of the school and will be returning in the fall of 2021 as an advocate for equity and inclusion . She received her bachelor ' s degree from the University of Maryland , College Park , in criminology and criminal justice and a minor certificate in Black women ' s studies . She was the first and only graduate of the school ' s newly named Harriet Tubman Department of Women , Gender and Sexuality Studies . During her time at UMD , she not only served on the Black Student Union executive board for three years , but she also served as the anti-basileus for her initiating chapter , Theta Nu . In both capacities , she prioritized programming geared towards marginalized groups . Once at Seton , Soror Anderson will also develop and teach an introductory Black Women ' s History class , which will also be a first in the school ' s 60-year history .
Anderson-Thompkins Named First Vice Provost
Silver Soror Sibby Anderson-Thompkins of Mu Omicron Omega Chapter has been named the first vice provost for diversity , equity , and inclusion ( DEI ) at The University of the South in Sewanee , Tenn . She will identify barriers limiting progress in DEI and provide coordinating leadership for university-wide diversity and inclusion initiatives . Soror Anderson- Thompkins has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and administration , primarily serving and supporting the success of underrepresented groups . Previously , she was a special advisor to the chancellor and provost for equity and inclusion and the interim chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill ( UNC ). Her career includes serving as an associate dean at Hampshire College and faculty member and dean of advising at Agnes Scott College . Soror Anderson-Thompkins holds a B . A . and M . A . in communication studies from UNC and an M . S . in educational research from Georgia State University . She also completed a Ph . D . in educational policy studies . In addition , she was awarded a certificate in management and educational leadership from Harvard ' s Graduate School of Education .
Bracey Named Teacher of the Year
Soror Sharon Dees Bracey has been educating students for 15 years at Terrell High School and is one of a few African Americans in the Terrell Independent School District to be named Teacher of the Year . As a chemistry teacher , Soror Bracey served as a teacher and mentor to her students , instilling integrity , character , compassion , respect for diversity , and the importance of excellence while becoming productive members of society . Soror Bracey was initiated at Alpha Iota Chapter in 1972 on the campus of Lincoln University , where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology / chemistry . She further obtained a Master of Science degree in human resources and training and a Master of Education in educational leadership . After relocating to Dallas , she was affiliated with and a long-time Alpha Xi Omega Chapter member . In addition , she served in numerous organizations , including Ambassador of the City of Mesquite , Black Dallas Remembered , Inc ., and St . Luke United Methodist Church .
Carr Opens First Brick-and-Motar
Sigma Sigma Omega Chapter member and founder of Good Girl Chocolate ( GGC ) Soror Tabatha Carr recently held an official grand opening for the first Blackowned permanent mall tenant and first brick-and-mortar location in Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City . GGC began in 2018 as an e-commerce chocolatier , catering to health-conscious consumers and chocolate lovers looking not to compromise smart choices for taste . GGC has grown from a singular mission to internationally known . It is a leading vegan chocolate that received local and national accolades in its few years of operation . GGC has been featured in the Grammy ' s gifting suite and select Oscar nominee gift bags and was a 2020 grant recipient of Beyonce ' s BeyGOOD Foundation . Soror Carr received a B . S . and MBA in health administration from Oklahoma City University . Serves as the director of professional development on the board of Oklahoma Women in Technology , volunteers with Positive Tomorrows , Baptist Children ' s Home , and Ronald McDonald House . Cavitt Makes an Impact
Soror Portia Cavitt , a member of Delta Epsilon Omega Chapter , made significant impacts in her North Omaha community . In March 2021 , Soror Cavitt saw an opportunity to voice concerns about vaccine disparities in the city , specifically in the North Omaha area , a predominantly black community . She expressed her opinion and spoke publicly about the lack of permanent vaccination clinics in the North Omaha area . One week later , the Omaha Douglas County Health Department partnered with Girls Inc . and the University of Nebraska Medical Center to open a vaccine clinic for the North Omaha residents . The response towards the new vaccination clinic in North Omaha was incredibly positive and wellreceived . The clinic vaccinated almost 6,000 people within the North Omaha area , according to the data provided by the Omaha Douglas County Health Department . Soror Cavitt is committed to the health of her North Omaha community . Soror Cavitt also serves as pastor of Clair Memorial United Methodist Church in the North Omaha community .
