SUMMER 2019 I talian A merican D igest a booth at the Italian Festival in Kenner, Louisiana. At the booth, t-shirts were sold along with available information on Cefalu, Sicily, membership to the Cefalutana Society and the many fun events that are held throughout the year. There was continuous music played by different bands at this annual festival. An assortment of Italian delicacies were for sale to eat like cannolli, meatballs, stuffed artichokes and muffaletas. Thanks to Mr. Joe Battaglia, Presidente, he has established the Salvadore J. Serio Presidential Scholarship award. This award to an incoming Cabrini High School senior brings us back to the important reason why this society was established in the first place. The history and spirit of this Italian Society is very important and should not be forgotten. By giving this award to a deserving senior, it enables this student to continue their education in the proper way by providing a $1000 financial award. This is the fourth year that the Cefalutana Society will be awarding this scholarship. It is with great pleasure that The Salvadore J. Serio President Scholarship award will be given to Katie Heller. Congratulations goes to Katie for all of her hard work and dedication to her education at Cabrini High School. We now have 166 members in the Societa Italiana di Mutua Beneficenza. This is a great accomplishment as our society continues to grow every year. This year we will be celebrating 132 years in August of 2019. Please note that membership is open only to those over the age of 18 who have blood ties to Cefalu. If you feel that your accestors were from Cefalu, Sicily, please contact the Cefalutana Society through the website, cefalutanasociety.com. The Cefalutana Society of New Orleans is a great organization representing our ancestors who came to New Orleans for a better life.
