Model-based Systems Engineering - Navigating Mindsets and Perspectives. Meredith Hue Director Defence Systems Integration Engineering DSTO
It’s a statement of the obvious: that modelling principles and techniques are fundamental to notions of model-based systems engineering (MBSE). System modelling has been an enduring method of enquiry supporting systems analysis and design synthesis in systems engineering for decades, pioneered by the Defence and Aerospace sectors. New generation MBSE tools now extend the systems modelling environment even further, ostensibly providing improved ability to cope with the more onerus demands of engineering the future larger scale and more complex systems, challenging us today. When exploring notions of MBSE as applied to Defence and other large scale civilian projects taking on particularly difficult and complex problems, it is essential to ensure there is sufficient common understanding of the underlying fundamental principles within the stakeholder community of concern to unleash the power of methodologies available and to minimise ambiguity. The concept of system modelling is explored from various perspectives, including the systems engineer, the operations analyst, the enterprise architect, the acquisition manager, the client, and the end user, where even simple terms can have varied interpretation within the stakeholder community. Various modelling concepts are explored, including real world modelling, conceptual modelling, decision modelling, architecture modelling and data modelling. The significance of the modelling language is also explored along with modelling methodologies and methods of model representation. Finally the implications are considered in the combined context of the systems engineering, software engineering, and ICT architecting disciplines.
