Bring Your Own App - Side-stepping bureaucracy and rallying acceptance from the ground up Winner of the Prof. R. Geoff Dromey Foundation Scholarship Bryce Thomas PhD Candidate James Cook University
End users often have the best understanding of the tools they need to accomplish a given task. The mobile app ecosystem has lowered the barriers to distributing sophisticated application software and made it easier for smaller developers to attract an audience. The proliferation of 3rd party software creates tension between organisations who have traditionally sought to control the software environment and users who seek the most appropriate tool for the task at hand. This presentation provides a case study of one such piece of 3rd party software, a small campus maps application and the challenges faced gaining acceptance of the tool within the university organisation. These challenges include gaining access to rudimentary nonsensitive data, addressing concerns around the possibility of errors and working around an administrative department's attempts to prevent the app being promoted. We take the position that in some instances diplomacy fails and that side-stepping bureaucracy and going straight to end users is a more effective strategy.
