Investigating the impacts of ocean acidification in the Southern Ocean - Antarctic Cruise | Page 26

A Frenchman in the Antarctic Clement Georges, January 17, 2013
I’ m a French PhD student and I work on protist diversity, but on board I do flow cytometry to count bacteria and protists in the sea water.
It’ s my first cruise and it’ s very exciting to be heading so far South and approach the Antarctic continent and the ice edge. I am involved in a really exciting project which is really far from my PhD but I am learning a lot and people are really helpful. Especially, for a foreigner who has its first experience with only English native speakers.
One of the best things being at sea is that you are really close to the wildlife. Yesterday morning, I was taking my coffee on the deck, and at this moment a group of penguins were swimming just near the ship and they did this during all the sampling period.

And just to thank Sophie who helped me to write this message, a beautiful photograph of her at work.
