We are currently carrying out a couple of zig zags through the Antarctic current systems as shown on the map below – this has taken us further away from land and away from most of the birds except for our loyal Cape Petrels.

However, when we stopped for the evening sampling station half a dozen chinstrap penguins miraculously appeared and swam cheerfully round the ship – so there must really be a lot of them around, unless they had been swimming rapidly after us all the way from Elephant Island... and finally, we just had a very nice sunset
