We are currently carrying out a couple of zig zags through the Antarctic current systems as shown on the map below – this has taken us further away from land and away from most of the birds except for our loyal Cape Petrels .

However , when we stopped for the evening sampling station half a dozen chinstrap penguins miraculously appeared and swam cheerfully round the ship – so there must really be a lot of them around , unless they had been swimming rapidly after us all the way from Elephant Island . .. and finally , we just had a very nice sunset
