1 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
During one hour, a group of 40 volunteers from different countries implemented environmental changes in Viru Keskus, in order to transform it into a more user-friendly shopping mall.
How?
- audio was off when usually there is music (connection to hearing impairments)
- hanged posters were showing changed colors and letters, addressing the issues of colourblindness and dyslexia
- the wheelchair disability sign was used in the car parking, toilets and benches (connection to mobility impairments – MI)
- stairs were covered by red ramps in 80% of its surface (MI)
- in the elevators, part of the information was written in Braille (VI)
- a sign language video was used in the TV screens of the shopping mall (HI)
- the installation “Escape”, from the artist Kristina Kivirand, resulted in an interactive approach with the public. “In Sound” – a movie without visuals which features a woman with visual impairment - was screened inside of this iron cage
- the intervention “The Puzzle” took place in the central area of Viru Keskus, making a connection to autism through the silent construction of a question mark made of newspapers.
- interviews took place on spot
- all the action was filmed by eight different cameras spread in the shopping mall. Afterwards, volunteers recorded their own perspectives about Invert to Alert and the topic of disabilities and added them to following the video:
