By Julia Faulks
In the last annual survey conducted by SET, members said they
would like to see more information about career development and
progression, with instant access to relevant topics and advice on how
to remain positive during times of uncertainty.
In response to this feedback, SET has launched an online Career
Focus section to help you manage your professional development.
The new section hosts a wealth of

“We know our SET members teach in a variety of contexts, so we’re
including content to support people in transitioning between diff erent
parts of the sector.
“Health and wellbeing is also part of our vision for the new section,
with advice on how to support your mental health and soon-to-be

Support for fi nance directors
A new professional development programme to support chief
financial off icers (CFOs) working in further education has been
announced by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF).
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
(ICAEW) has been commissioned by ETF to deliver a programme that
will support a step change in the ability of CFOs and finance directors
(FDs) to team up with their chief executives to drive strategy forward.
The programme is launched against a backdrop of continued
financial challenge across the FE sector. In 2014/15 the further
education (FE) commissioner’s annual report said that 14 of its
17 interventions were due to financial concerns.
Sir Frank McLoughlin, ETF director of leadership, said: “The CFO
has been underrated and under-supported as a key figure in the
success of further education.
“Financial and business acumen will support financial stability,
high quality teaching and good learner outcomes.”
The programme will help participants develop the knowledge
and skills to deliver their institution’s strategic objectives sustainably
and in the public interest; build a forward-looking and resilient
finance function; and generate profitable and sustainable growth
for their institution.
