FE professionals
remain resilient in
turbulent times
Your latest issue of inTuition arrives with you following a general election in
which education has figured large in the main parties’ manifestos. Happily,
I think this signals a growing recognition among politicians of the central
importance of high quality education and training.
Change in this direction was already well under way before the election,
including reforms to apprenticeships and traineeships (as Mark Dawe
discusses opposite), a brand new suite of technical qualifications
(T Levels), and the Area Reviews of further education provision.
Any one of those would be a handful for any profession. And yet, many
of the SET members I speak with seem to take this ongoing turbulence in
their stride. They are resilient and draw strength from the values, practices
and standards that imbue their professional lives.
Nafisah Graham-Brown, who features on the cover and page 10 of
this issue, is a case in point. Like so many of our members, Nafisah
achieves the extraordinary on a daily basis by off ering education and
hope to disadvantaged people,
including many refugees.
The manifestos signalled
In these diff icult times, teachers and
a growing recognition
trainers provide vital channels through
among politicians
which those at risk of alienation
of the importance of
and disaff ection, whatever their
education and training
background, can instead find a place
for themselves in society.
Professionals like Nafisah are under no illusions about the challenges
facing education and training. But, amidst the uncertainty, they remain
dedicated to their students, and are grounded in a professional practice
that is underpinned by evidence and research.
To encourage this dedication, SET has launched its Online Research
Library for members, powered by the world-leading EBSCO platform (see
the story on page 4). This library off ers free access to a world of research
to support your understanding and enhancement of your practice, and to
help you thrive in your career.
The library includes a specially curated Careers Skills Research Centre,
complementing the further information and resources for career
development that are available in the new Career Focus section of
our website (see story on page 5).
