Education and Training Foundation board member Shakira Martin has been elected as the next president of the National Union of Students.
Shakira, a member of the ETF board since July 2015, takes over from Malia Bouattia as president on 1 July.
Commenting on her election, Shakira said:“ Further education made me who I am today and I look forward to sharing stories of just how powerful all forms of education can be when we’ re all given access to it.”
Emily Chapman, from Leeds City College, will replace Shakira as vice president( FE).

SET members can now access a new, online library offering a huge range of international research on education and training.
The SET Online Research Library, powered by EBSCO – a world leader in information and research databases – offers access to articles from more than 1,300 education journals, 530 e-books and monographs and 2,300 education-related conference papers.
These include: the Journal of Education; the Journal of Educational Research; the Journal of Further and Higher Education; the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching; the Journal of STEM Education; the Journal of Vocational Education and Training; the Education
Journal; Education Review; and Educational Action Research.
The library also features SET’ s Career Skills Research Centre which contains thousands of curated articles, e-books, and video interviews on employability, management and leadership skills – allowing members to broaden their knowledge of relevant topics to support their personal and career development.
Tim Weiss, director of SET, said:“ We’ re delighted that we’ ve been steadily able to build our support for members in engaging with research over the past two years.
“ Our new online research library, powered by EBSCO, takes this to a new level by putting a wealth of leading journals and published content at our members’ fingertips to support their own research projects and evidence-based improvements to their practice.
“ The Careers Skills Research Centre also provides a treasure trove of literature on employability, leadership and management skills to help strengthen members’ career development.”
The online research library is the latest development from SET, whose mission is to engage members in the active use, creation and dissemination of research into effective teaching and learning practices, in line with the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers.
Additional support in this area includes: a new online interactive research map; increased research content in inTuition; the annual inTuition Research Supplement; and bursaries to support SET members on the Education and Training Foundation’ s( ETF) Practitioner Research Programme.
