The first king of Rome , Romulus , is believed to have invented the first Roman calendar around the year 753 BC . That calendar began in March , consisted of 10 months and 304 days , and each new year began at the vernal equinox .
Calendar of Romulus : 1 . Martius - 31 Days 2 . Aprilis - 30 Days 3 . Maius - 31 Days 4 . Iunius - 30 Days 5 . Quintilis - 31 Days 6 . Sextilis - 30 Days 7 . September - 30 Days 8 . October - 31 Days 9 . November - 30 Days 10 . December - 30 Days
It turns out that the date actually has nothing to do with this resolution ritual . Thousands of years ago , civilizations around the world marked the new year by agricultural or astronomical events .
