THE BEDROOM
After a long winter , it ’ s great to be able to fling open the windows and let that fresh spring air circulate . The bedroom is a place to relax and unwind , so it ’ s vital that it ’ s inviting and that means clutter free and clean .
1 . Care for curtains
Cleaning the curtains is definitely one for the checklist . Dirt and dust can collect at the bottoms , so start with a good vacuum and brush down before taking the curtains down . For a thorough clean , it ’ s best to take the curtains outside into the fresh air . Whilst airing , target any marks using a damp cloth and soapy solution . For tougher stains avoid using cleaning products that may harm the fabric , instead read into products or take them to be professionally cleaned , this will give you the best results . Don ’ t forget to clean the poles and rings while you ' re at it .
2 . Makeover the mattress
Dust mites and dead skin ( yuk !) can build up over time if we don ’ t regularly clean our mattresses . As we are all in need of quality night ' s sleep ( more than ever !) cleaning your mattress will definitely promote this . Similarly to the sofa ( see p106 ), use baking soda to target marks – sprinkle on , leave for 30 minutes and then hoover it up . For those tough stains , try using diluted washing up liquid or a specialist upholstery cleaner – follow the instructions and your mattress will have a new lease of life !
3 . Plump up the pillows
Our pillows need a little attention every once in a while , you should aim to do this every 6 months really . Hand wash feather or foam pillows with warm soapy water , you could add a little washing detergent too where necessary . For other man-made fabrics , you can just use the washing machine , add in a little stain remover and baking soda for odours and wash on a medium . Always try to air dry pillows outside !
THE BATHROOM
Since we use the bathroom to keep our bodies clean , it should in theory be the cleanest room in the house . However , that isn ’ t always the case , and with water , steam and grime contributing to a buildup of bacteria and all sorts of other nasties , it ’ s important that we are considering a regular deep clean in the bathroom .
1 . Bleach the loo
Cleaning the toilet is probably one of the worst chores when it comes to housework , but one of the most essential . This is where bleach becomes your best friend , and a bleach-based toilet cleaner will be sure to rid of any unwanted germs lingering around the rim and lid . Be sure to scrub all of the inside thoroughly and then flush . Use a disinfectant spray or wipes for the seat and exterior , don ’ t forget to give the flush and tank the once over . Remember to regularly soak your toilet brush in a strong disinfectant – there really is nothing worse than a dirty toilet brush !
2 . Target the tiles
One of the biggest grime build ups in the bathroom is around grouted tiles , especially if you have a tiled shower room . Ceramic and porcelain tiles can be really easy to clean with most cleaning solutions , marble on the other hand can react to certain products or acids , so please ensure to check the small print . Start by cleaning the grout first , use a heavier chemical cleaner to get rid of any mildew and mould buildups and always remember to open the window to minimise fumes . Lemon juice is a great alternative for cleaning tiles , using a spray bottle , combine the juice with water , cover the surface and wipe clean with a damp cloth .
Floor tiles can be slightly trickier to clean and you probably want to leave that job until last . Sometimes , the good old fashioned scrubber can be the only way forward – use a cleaning or vinegar solution spray on the surface area and get cleaning . Otherwise , you might want to invest in a steam cleaner , also great for use in the kitchen .
3 . Descale the showerhead
Limescale build up is inevitable in hard water areas and can leave your shower looking and feeling a bit sorry for itself . The answer here ? White vinegar ! Not only is it great for getting rid of grease and grime , soak your shower head in a vinegar and water solution overnight and the limescale will just wipe off . Otherwise , there are some great limescale killer products on the market . Hey presto , a brand new shower !
