Canterbury Murders was written in the midst of lockdown , how did you find the motivation to undertake such a mammoth project ? A number of projects that I was working on were put on hold with lockdown , I thought I should make use of the time and set myself a challenge . I didn ’ t start with the intention of writing a full length book , I started out with a short story . It grew from that and I found that I enjoyed the process much more than I imagined . I am in the middle of writing the next one , so it ’ s turning into a series , and I am loving it .

Murder on the Downs will keep you glued to the page until the very end , and be warned , though there is no doubt that you can enjoy this book as a stand alone , once you have finished it , your fingers will be itching to see how it all started for protagonist Pearl Nolan and friends .
The Whitstable Pearl Mystery series has spanned for 5 years and spawned 7 books – with an 8th on the way , what is it about protagonist Pearl ’ s story that inspires you so ? For twenty years I was a TV drama writer with a secret desire to write a crime novel . Once I moved to Whitstable , I knew I had found the right setting for it . My heroine Pearl , once harboured a secret desire ; to become a high ranking police detective , but when a teenage pregnancy got in the way of her training , she settled down to life as a single mum . Twenty years on , she revisits old ambitions by setting up her own detective agency , so you could say Pearl and I are fulfilling old dreams together .
