Electric Vehicles - Towards a Greener and Sustainable Transportation Network

As the world progresses toward a low-carbon , and potentially carbon-free , automotive future , electric vehicles ( EVs ) are gaining prominence as an increasingly appealing , and eventually cost-efficient , means to achieve this objective . The current EV penetration rate , standing at 4 % in 2020 , is anticipated to surge to 20 % by 2025 , 50 % by 2030 , and surpass Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles ( ICEVs ) in sales from 2035 onward . Figure 1 shows the EV sales worldwide [ 1 ].
The race in ASEAN nations in the EV sector is intensifying as countries steadily revise and enhance their EV development strategies . In Malaysia , the adoption of EVs has been gradually gaining attention .
Malaysia has outlined a roadmap with initiatives to support the development and adoption of EVs through the National Automotive Policy ( NAP ). The “ NATIONAL TRANSPORT POLICY : 2019-2030 ”, released by the Malaysian Ministry of Transport , clearly states the objective of
