This initiative is targeted at the professional service providers . BEM is to take the lead for the engineering sector i . e ., the engineering consultancy practices . In order to measure the productivity increase ( targeted for 30 % by 2022 ), it is necessary to establish a baseline so that any productivity increase can be properly measured and established . It was therefore proposed and agreed that a baseline survey would be carried out . The baseline survey would also provide BEM with an indication of the level of adoption of emerging technology amongst the engineering consultancy practices in the country .
This study was carried out with CREAM who have also commissioned other professional bodies in the construction industry to carry out similar studies .
THE SURVEY
● To review the baseline survey results
● To validate the survey results based on the group discussions held
● To finalise the recommendations to be included in the final report
The workshop validated the survey results and the recommendations were included in this report .
RESPONDENTS PROFILE
The profile of the respondents were mainly engineering consultancy practices comprising body corporate ( 47.30 %) and sole proprietors ( 34.98 %) in the civil and structural discipline ( 52.82 %) located in the central region of Peninsular Malaysia ( 55.81 %). This is generally in line with the profile of ECPs registered with BEM as can be seen in the comparison charts .
Survey forms were prepared and issued on February 22 , 2022 to all ECPs ( 2,500 ) registered with BEM . The survey , in the form of an electronic survey , was carried out through the SurveyMonkey system . The survey exercise closed on March 13 , 2022 . To ensure that the survey is representative , survey forms were issued to all ECPs registered with BEM . The minimum sample size was calculated based on the population size of 2,500 . Based on a margin of error of no greater than 5 % using a confidence level of 95 % and a standard deviation of 0.5 , minimum sample size should be about 400 . BEM received 877 responses to the survey i . e ., around 35 % of those surveyed responded .
In addition to the survey , six focus group discussions ( based on geographical locations of the ECPs ) were held , involving a total of 45 ECPs . The purpose of the focus group discussions is to delve further into the areas covered in the survey and also to validate the results of the survey results .
